Gophers Fall to the Huskers in 5 Sets

The No. 25 University of Minnesota fell to No. 14 Nebraska in five sets, 25-21, 25-16, 21-25, 19-25, and 7-15. Minnesota drops to 13-7 overall and 3-6 in the Big Ten, while the Huskers improve to 12-6 and 6-3 in league action.
Sarah Wilhite and Hannah Tapp led the team in kills with 14 each. Wilhite added 11 digs in the match for a double-double. Hannah Tapp hit .500 in the match, while Paige Tapp was right behind her at .476. Dalianliz Rosado added a match-high 21 digs, a new career high. Katie Schau had 15 digs and also led the team in 46 assists. As a team, the Gophers hit .198 to Nebraska's .244. The Huskers also outblocked the Gophers 12-11, as well as digs 72-69.
Minnesota looks to rebound in the Big Ten with a victory at home Saturday night, when they host Iowa at 7:00 pm. Saturday's match is Minnesota's Dig Pink night. Admission is just $5.
Set 1: Minnesota held Nebraska to a .136 hitting clip and forced the Huskers to commit nine errors as they took the first set, 25-21. The Huskers jumped out to a quick 6-3 lead, but Minnesota tied the set at 7-7. The Gophers went on a 4-0 run to take a 14-10 lead on an Adrianna Nora kill. Minnesota earned three-straight kills from Wilhite and two from Santana to push the Gopher lead to 19-12. Nebraska added three-straight points to cut the lead to 19-15, but Wilhite ended the run with a kill. Santana push it to set point, while Nora put away the set for a 1-0 lead.
Set 2: Minnesota went up 2-0 on a 25-16 second set win as it hit .406 to Nebraska's .171 clip. The Gophers opened up the second set with a 9-6 lead to force the Huskers to take an early timeout. On the serve rotation of Rosado, the Gophers had a kill from Santana, a block from Schau and Paige Tapp and a kill from Paige Tapp. Minnesota then added a 4-1 run to push the lead to 15-11, capped off by a Wilhite kill. Hannah Tapp put the lead to 18-13 as Nebraska took another timeout. Nora pushed the lead on a kill at 22-15 (from Paige Tapp), while she added back-to-back kills to go up 2-0. Nora finished the second set with four kills.
Set 3: Nebraska won the third set, 25-21 as it hit .297 to Minnesota's .140. The two teams went through 11 tie scores and four lead changes before the Huskers took the lead for good at the 20-19 mark. After a 19-19 tie score, the Huskers had three-straight kills from Kelsey Fien to go up, 22-19 as Minnesota took a timeout. Paige Tapp stopped the run with kill while Hannah Tapp added a kill for a 23-21 deficit. However, the Huskers closed out the set on back-to-back blocks.
Set 4: Nebraska evened up the match with a 25-19 fourth-set win. The Huskers took a 15-9 lead as Minnesota called its second timeout of the set. The Huskers would take a 17-10 lead off a Gopher attack error. As the Huskers pushed the score to a 20-12 lead on another Gopher attack error. As Nebraska led 23-15, Minnesota would use the Santana serve rotation to get back into the set. The Gophers would get a block from Paige Tapp and a kill from Wilhite and another block from Paige Tapp and Wilhite for a 23-18 deficit. The Huskers, however, would close out the set and even the match on a Kadie Rolfzen kill.
Set 5: Nebraska hit .714 and won the fifth and deciding set, 15-7. Minnesota opened up the fifth set with a 3-1 lead, but the Huskers came back to tie it up at 4-4. Minnesota took another lead at 5-4 on a Hannah Tapp kill. The two teams again tied at 7-7 before Nebraska put away the match with an eight-point unanswered run.
