The No. 25 University of Minnesota volleyball team earned a 3-0 sweep over the Iowa Hawkeyes, tonight in front of 5,488 fans. Tonight's attendance was the highest of the season as the Golden Gophers improve to 14-7 overall and 4-6 in the Big Ten.
Minnesota hit .352, led by Adrianna Nora, who had 10 kills and individually hit a match-high .643. Hannah Tapp had eight kills, hit .368 and a team-high four blocks, while Paige Tapp hit .429 and have seven kills in 14 swings. Sarah Wilhite had eight kills, while Daly Santana had six kills, nine digs. Dalianliz Rosado added a team-high 10 digs.
As a team, the Gophers had 40 kills to Iowa's 22, added seven aces, and held a narrow 8-7 block advantage. On the match, the Maroon and Gold also had a 71 percent sideout ratio.
Minnesota hits the road for the next two weeks as it travels to Indiana, Oct. 29, 6 p.m. CT, and at Purdue, Nov. 1, 7:30 p.m. CT.
Notes-
-Minnesota's attendance previously beat the Penn State match (9/27) when the Gophers drew 5,028 fans.
-Nora led the Gophers in kills for the second time this season when she also had 10 against Albany
-The .643 hitting clip for Nora was also a career-best. Her previous best was against Toledo (9/19) earlier this year.
Set Breakdown:
Set 1: Minnesota hit .393 in the first set and took a 1-0 lead on a 25-12 set win. The Gophers had 13 kills in 28 attempts and committed just two errors, while holding a 75 percent sideout ratio. Minnesota's first set win was also propelled by an eight-point serve rotation from Paige Tapp. Minnesota opened the set with a 10-4 lead before Iowa took a timeout. The Gophers pushed the lead to 15-8 on a Nora kill before Paige Tapp's serve rotation put the Gophers up, 23-8. In that span, Minnesota had four kills, a block, an Iowa error and an ace. The Gophers closed out the set on a block from Hannah Tapp and Sarah Wilhite for the early lead.
Set 2: The Gophers took a 2-0 lead off a 25-14 second set win. Minnesota held the lead from the get-go en route to the win. Iowa closed the gap to 9-8 on a Gopher block error, but Minnesota rattled off a 9-2 run to cushion the lead to 18-10. Iowa used its second timeout at 15-10, but the Gophers responded out of the break with a Schau/Hannah Tapp block, while Iowa had two attack errors. Minnesota would later get a block from Santana and Hannah Tapp for a 21-12 lead. The Gophers would close on the set with a kill from Paige Tapp and the 23rd point, an Iowa attack error and a kill from Santana for a 2-0 lead.
Set 3: Despite Iowa changing its lineup and going up 9-5, Minnesota erased the deficit and won the match on a 25-18 third set win. Trailing 9-5, the Gophers got a much-needed kill from Santana. Following the kill, Rosado helped the Gophers to a five-point run to take an 11-9 lead. The Gophers never looked back as it won the set. The Hawkeyes pulled within one at 16-15 on an ace, but Minnesota went on a 6-1 run again to add to the lead. In the third set, Nora added another four kills and hit .500, while Rosado added five of her 10 digs.
