Gopher Sports: Why did you decide to attend the University of Minnesota?

Kiera Janzen: I decided to attend the University of Minnesota because of the team atmosphere and the coaching staff. Although this is somewhat of a cliché, the team here is a family. Everyone is unique and brings different qualities and perspectives to the table as athletes, students, and individuals. At the same time, we all support each other and have fun no matter the circumstances. I am very fortunate to be a part of a group like this one and to have had the opportunity to meet and become friends with so many awesome people. Additionally, in talking to and getting to know the coaches during the recruiting process, I truly felt that they believed in me and my goals in and out of the pool.

GS: What is your most memorable swimming/diving moment?

KJ: My most memorable swimming moment so far has been winning the Big Ten Championship Title in 2013 at our home pool.

GS: What is your favorite part of being a Golden Gopher?

KJ: My favorite part of being a Golden Gopher is having the opportunity to represent my home state. I have been a Gopher fan ever since I can remember, and it is awesome to be a part of such a rich tradition.

GS: What is your favorite pre-race song?

KJ: I don't necessarily have one favorite pre-race song, but I really like and listen to a lot of different rap music. At meets I'm usually listening to Lil Wayne and Waka Flocka Flame, and a go-to jam that pumps me up is "The Sky is the Limit" by Lil Wayne.

GS: What is the best advice you have received from one of the coaches at Minnesota?

KJ: I have gotten a lot of great advice from all of the coaches at Minnesota during my career here. But the best advice that I have received from my primary coach, Kelly Kremer, is to enjoy the process. It's sometimes easy for me to become hyper-focused on outcomes and results and forget to enjoy the day-to-day process of working towards those results, but I think that that's one of the keys to success in any area of life.

GS: What is your dream job?

KJ: My dream job is to be an attorney of some sort. It would also be pretty cool to be a Supreme Court justice.

GS: What is your favorite post-meet meal?

KJ: My favorite post-meet meal is steak, potatoes, Caesar salad, and watermelon.

GS: Do you have any other hobbies outside of swimming/diving?

KJ: I like to go sailing (as well as other nautical activities), read, watch movies, cook, and play the ukulele.

GS: What do you plan on doing after graduation?

KJ: After I graduate I plan to train through 2016 and then go to law school.

GS: Want to give a shout out to anyone?

KJ: I'd like to give a shout out to my amazing family, friends, coaches and teammates. I have a lot of incredible people in my life, and I am really grateful for them all.
