Jose Mendez is tied for third through 36 holes at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate in Dallas. The sophomore is two strokes out of second, and five off Mikkel Bjerch-Andresen's (Baylor) lead. The Golden Gophers are in 10th place as a team.
Mendez made par on all but two holes in his first round. He bogeyed the other two and shot a 73. Mendez then fired off a 3-under 68 in the afternoon, making five birdies to two bogeys.
Rúnar Arnorsson joins Mendez in the top 25 on Day 1. In the early round, he bogeyed three of his first four holes, but birdied three of the next five to get back to even. He carded a team-low 72 (+1) in the first round.
Matt Rachey and Grady Meyer (both tied for 63rd) had both rounds count toward the team score on Monday. Daniel Luftspring (tied for 58th) and Riley Johnson (tied for 67th) each counted once. Rachey and Johnson both shaved six strokes off their first round scores in the afternoon.
Minnesota improved by a dozen shots in the afternoon and moved from 12th to 10th during the second round.
The third and final round will tee off at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday.
