Rethwisch Leads Gophers at Blugold Invite

COLFAX, Wis. - Minnesota was led by Rebecca Rethwisch, Anne Ferguson and Chelsea Pettit as the Gopher women's cross country team raced at the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Invitational. Over 400 runners from 26 teams competed in the 6-kilometer race at Whitetail Golf Course Friday afternoon.
Rethwisch led the Golden Gophers in 18th overall, clocking a time of 22:58.1 over the 6K course. Ferguson was the second Gopher in 23:04.3 for 21st place, followed by Pettit in 26th (23:10.3) overall.
Fellow redshirt juniors Andie Zeman (23:13.0) and Hannah Trasser (23:31.1) were the fourth and fifth Gopher finishers, followed by Marnie Kinnaird (23:42.9) and Melissa Cabak (23:44.1) to round out Minnesota's top seven.
Minnesota tied for second in the team standings with St. Olaf with 105 points each. Carleton won the meet with 49 points, and St. Benedict (122 points) and host UW-Eau Claire (134) completed the top five team finishes. Carleton's Ruth Steinke won the meet in 21:59.7.
Several Gophers competed unattached, including overall runner-up Emily Castanias (22:00.5). Patty O'Brien (ninth, 22:44.4), Courtney Alama (15th, 22:51.0), Sarah Richardson (20th, 23:02.8), Molly Eastman (40th, 23:30.1), Liz Miller (122nd, 24:34.9) and Madeline Brighouse Glueck (166th, 25:06.2) also raced unattached.
Tomorrow, Minnesota's top 12 runners are set to race at the SDSU Classic in Brookings, S.D. The Gophers have historically had success at the meet, winning the team title in each of the past nine years. The race will be a 5K consisting of 1K-2K-2K loops. It is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning.
Becca Dyson (sixth, 17:51.96), Liz Berkholtz (eighth, 18:03.56), Kaila Urick (10th, 18:08.90) and Kate Bucknam (13th, 18:13.94) are the lone Gophers returning to the SDSU Classic from the Minnesota lineup that won the meet a year ago. Danielle Anderson, Megan Bailey, Haley Johnson, Taylor Mikkalson, Bailey Ness, Jamie Piepenburg, Madeline Strandemo and Stacey Swatek will complete the Maroon & Gold lineup at the SDSU Classic this year.
