Final Stats

The University of Minnesota volleyball team fell in straight sets, 25-20, 25-22, 25-20, to No. 13 Purdue University, tonight in West Lafayette, Ind. With the loss, the Gophers fall to 14-9 on the season and 4-8 in the Big Ten. The Boilermakers improve to 19-5 and 9-3 in Big Ten play.

Daly Santana had a match-high kills, followed by Adrianna Nora with eight. Paige Tapp added a team-high five blocks, while Dalianliz Rosado tied a match-high 13 digs. Katie Schau added 27 assists. The Boilermakers were led by Danielle Cuttino, who hit .583, while Annie Drews had a team-high nine kills. Purdue had 44 kills to Minnesota’s 34, out hit the Gophers .223 to .114 and held a 10-6 block advantage.

Minnesota goes on the road for the second time in as many weeks as it travels to Michigan State and Michigan, Nov. 7-8. Friday’s match against the Spartans is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT, while the match against the Wolverines is for 6 p.m. CT>

Set 1: The Boilermakers made it 1-0 on a 25-20 first set win. Purdue jumped out to a 14-7 lead as Minnesota took its second timeout. Minnesota, however, would battle back into the set and trail 15-14 off a Gopher block from Wilhite and Paige Tapp. The lead cut to one, Purdue called a timeout. Wilhite tied it at 15 and would exchange points and ties until 19-19. The Boilermakers would use back-to-back points for a 21-19 lead and contained the lead until the 25-20 mark. Purdue hit .162 in the set, bettering Minnesota’s .062. The teams combined for eight blocks in the set.

Set 2: Purdue and Minnesota went through seven tie scores and five lead changes, but the Boilermakers took a 2-0 lead off a 25-22 second set win. Purdue jumped out to a 7-4 lead before the Gophers tied it at 7-7. After the two teams tied at 10, Purdue added a three-point run for a 13-10 lead and later a 15-12 lead. The Gophers, however, battled back to tie the set at 18-18. Purdue, however, would go up 22-20 on a kill. Minnesota cut the lead to one at 23-22 on a Nora kill, but the Boilermakers had a block, while a Gopher attack error pushed their lead to 2-0.

Set 3: The Boilermakers hit a match-best .300 in the third set to take it, 25-20 and the match, 3-0. Tied at 9-9, Purdue used an 8-2 run for an 18-11 lead. With the Boilermakers up 20-12, the Gophers went on a 5-1 run to cut the lead to 21-17. Purdue pushed the set to match point, 24-17, before the Gophers had two kills and an ace to push the score to 24-20 before Drews added her ninth kill of the match for the 3-0 finish.
