Gophers Earn Four-Set Win At Michigan State

Hannah Tapp hit a team-high .545 as she had seven kills in 11 attempts and just one error. Daly Santana had a match-best 17 kills in 47 swings, while Alyssa Goehner had 12 kills in 34 attempts to hit .294. Sarah Wilhite, who saw action in the front row in the third and fourth set, had nine kills in 19 attempts to hit .421. Katie Schau had a match-best 43 assists. Dalianliz Rosado added a team-high 14 digs.
As a team, Minnesota hit .288 in the match to Michigan State's .179. The Gophers held a narrow 11-10 block led as both teams had 55 kills. Minnesota, however, had just 15 attack errors to MSU's 30.
The Gophers head to Ann Arbor, Mich., as they face Michigan, tomorrow night at 6 p.m. CT.
Set Breakdown:
Set 1: Minnesota used an 11-point lead to take the first set, 25-18 over MSU and go up 1-0. The Gophers opened the match with a 13-5 lead, capped off by a block from Santana and Paige Tapp. Santana put the score at 16-7 on a kill, while the Gophers pushed the lead to 20-9 on a Nora/P Tapp block. MSU attempted a comeback at the end of the set to close the deficit with a four-point run at 23-8, however, Minnesota finished off the set with back-to-back kills from Santana. Minnesota had 13 kills in 35 attempts and committed three errors. MSU had 14 kills, nine errors in 38 attempts. The Gophers outhit MSU .286 to .132 in the first.
Set 2: Michigan State used a 10-point lead to tie up the match with a 25-16 second set win. The Spartans followed similar fashion to the Gophers and opened the second set with a 12-5 lead after four-straight Spartan kills. MSU jumped out to an 18-10 lead off a Gopher attack error and a 20-12 lead off a kill. Hannah Tapp cut the lead to 22-13, while Santana had a kill for Minnesota's 14th point. The Spartans, however, closed out the set with a Allyssah Fitterer kill, her sixth of the net. MSU hit .333 in the set to Minnesota's .122.
Set 3: Minnesota went up 2-1 on a 25-17 third-set win. Propelled by Wilhite, who had five kills in eight attempts, the Gophers hit .323 in the third set, while four Gophers earned multiple kills in the set. Minnesota also established 72 sideout percent. The Gophers went up 9-6 on a Hannah Tapp kill as MSU called a timeout. With MSU cutting Minnesota's deficit to one at 14-13, Wilhite responded back with a kill to go back up 15-13. Minnesota would then go on a four-point run, three of which came on Wilhite's serve rotation, including an ace. With an 18-14 lead, Minnesota pushed the lead to 20-15 on a Santana kill as the Spartans called another timeout. Wilhite pushed the score to 23-16 on a kill, followed by two kills from Paige Tapp for a 2-1 lead.
Set 4: Minnesota finished off the match as it hit a match-best .429 in the fourth set. Santana hit .333 in the set with six kills, while Wilhite had four in eight swings. Goehner had four kills in five attempts, while Hannah Tapp added three kills in three attempts. Minnesota took an 11-4 lead in the fourth set when Hannah Tapp established a solo block. Michigan State called a timeout when the Gophers held a 15-6 lead of an MSU attack error. After MSU cut the team to 16-10, Minnesota called a timeout, regrouped and later would go up 20-12 on a Hannah Tapp kill. An Alyssa Goehner kill pushed the score to 22-13, followed by two kills from Santana for the Gophers' 23rd and 24th points. Minnesota capped off the win on a Wilhite kill, her ninth kill of the night on her 19th attempt.
