Gophers Fall to UMD in Series Opener

No. 1 Minnesota (7-2-0 overall, 0-0-0-0 Big Ten) suffered its first shutout since falling 2-0 to Colorado College on March 22, 2013 in the WCHA Final Five and its first shutout loss at Mariucci Arena since falling 2-0 to Denver on March 1, 2013 - a span of more than 20 months.
Adam Wilcox was the one positive for the Gophers on Friday night, making a season-high 35 saves on 38 shots against to move to 7-2-0 on the year. Kasimir Kaskisuo picked up the win for Minnesota Duluth with 17 saves to move to 6-3-0.
The Bulldogs (7-4-0, 4-2-0 NCHC) jumped out to an early lead in a penalty filled first period when Austin Farley scored a power-play goal just 2:07 into the game off assists from Andy Welinski and Cal Decowski. Minnesota Duluth added to the lead midway through the second period when Dan Molenaar found the net at 9:55 after being set up by Karson Kuhlman and Tony Cameranesi. Dominic Toninato closed out the scoring in the third period with a power-play goal at 11:42, set up by Farley and Decowski.
The Gophers and the Bulldogs return to action on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Amsoil Arena in Duluth. The series finale is on FOX Sports North PLUS with radio broadcast on 1500 ESPN.
