Minnesota Postgame Quotes
Head Coach Marlene Stollings
Opening statement:
"Credit to Cleveland State. It was almost like a conference game for us as a staff. This is our third year in a row playing them, so we have a lot of familiarity with one another and our systems. Our systems haven't changed very much. Credit to them. They really came in and battled. They're a well-coached team. I thought from our end, we did a great job of staying poised, battling back. It was the first time we've been tested a little bit. Some of our coverages were off early in the game and to start the second half. We eventually responded and addressed those areas. I thought we did a good job in the second half of getting out and running. It was a credit to our defense in opening things up by getting stops and getting on the open floor, which really opened up for us late in the half."
On Amanda Zahui B.'s play:
"She gave us a tremendous lift, defensively in particular. They were coming in the paint, and she was pretty much knocking everything out of there and making it really hard for them to get those points under the basket. …Offensively, we had an incredible size advantage. …As long as they stayed in man-to-man, we knew that we could attack under the basket, and I thought we did a good job of getting her the ball."
On halftime adjustments:
"We made a couple of adjustments, but the biggest thing is we weren't moving. We were kind of halfway where we were supposed to be. We can't do that against teams that can shoot the ball as well as they can and also put it on the floor. The biggest thing is that we needed to start moving our feet. We were matched up inappropriately a few times, and we had talked about those areas and fixing those areas. After the first timeout in the second half, we finally got there to our adjustments and what we needed to do to prevent them from getting such open looks."
Senior Guard Rachel Banham
On her career-high 13 assists:
"My teammates were running the floor. We like to run and push it on the fast break. I thought we had really great spacing and our posts were in their lanes. That really helped a lot."
On her teammates' scoring abilities:
"I don't have to keep shooting as much… I can get other people the ball as well, and I have confidence that we'll make the shot."
Senior Forward Shae Kelley
On the key to her role in creating transition baskets:
"Just anticipating. They had me on the right wing so I can get those steals. …Take a couple chances. A couple of them I missed, but those are chances that usually I can get."
On how tough it is for opponents to defend Minnesota's fast style of play:
"Very tough. Our conditioning helps. We get out and run. When I'm getting the rebound, the wings are gone. It's going to be tough for a lot of teams to stay with us."
On how fast her transition has gone to her new team:
"Very quick. This is my style of play-run and gun, get it up, get down the court and score. I think I've adjusted well."
