Gophers Fall in Five to No. 20 OSU

The University of Minnesota volleyball team fell in five sets to No. 20 Ohio State, tonight, in Columbus. Ohio. The Golden Gophers fell 21-25, 26-28, 29-27, 25-13 and 8-15. With the loss, the Gophers drop to 18-12 overall and 8-11 in the Big Ten. Ohio State improves to 20-11 overall and 11-8 in Big Ten play.
Paige Tapp hit .385 and had 10 kills and had a match-high eight total blocks. Hannah Tapp hit .353 and had eight kills. Daly Santana had a team-high 15 kills, followed by Alyssa Goehner with 11. Molly Lohman had seven kills in 14 swings, while Sarah Wilhite had eight. Dalianliz Rosado had a match-high 18 digs, followed by Katie Schau with 10. She also had 29 assists for a double double. Erica Handley added 21 assists.
Set 1: OSU opened with a 25-21 first set win as it hit .414 in the set to Minnesota's .278. The two teams exchanged points until Ohio State used a two-point advantage for a 15-13 lead. As the OSU lead went to 20-17, Minnesota called a timeout. Alyssa Goehner and Lohman had a block to cut the lead to 20-18, but OSU pushed the score to 22-18 as Minnesota used another timeout. The Gophers, however, had kills from Hannah Tapp and Daly Santana to cut the OSU lead to 23-21 as the Buckeyes called a timeout. The Buckeyes, however, closed out the set on a block and a Gopher attack error to take a 1-0 lead.
Set 2: Ohio State came back from a 24-21 deficit to tie up the set at 24 and win the set on a 28-26 win. Minnesota held a 19-14 lead and a 24-21 lead on a kill from Paige Tapp. The Buckeyes, however, had three-straight kills from Luisa Schirmer to tie the set at 24-24. The two teams exchanged points until OSU earned a kill from Sandbothe, while Santana added an attack error for the 28-26 finish. Minnesota hit .324 on the set to OSU's .286.
Set 3: The Gophers cut the deficit to 2-1 on a 29-27 third set win. Minnesota trailed 13-10 and went on a 5-0 run for a 15-13 lead. OSU tied it up at 15 with a kill and an ace. The Gophers would go up three at 20-17 on two Gopher blocks and an OSU attack error. The Buckeyes would come back and tie the set at 23-23 on a kill. In a race to a two-point lead, the Gophers had two chances before they closed out the set on a Santana kill and an OSU attack error. Minnesota hit just .073 in the set to OSU's .173, but the Gophers added 6.5 blocks for the set win.
Set 4: Minnesota rolled to a 25-13 fourth set win to send the match to the fifth set. The Gophers hit .364 to Ohio State's -.032 and added two blocks in the set. The Gophers opened the fourth set with a 4-1 run, capped off by a kill from Hannah Tapp. Minnesota pushed the lead to 8-4 as OSU called a timeout. Minnesota, however, pushed the lead to 12-7 on a Goehner ace and 15-8 on a Paige Tapp ace. Sarah Wilhite put the set at 19-12 on a kill. Goehner earned a kill for set point and OSU committed an attack error as the two teams played to five.
Set 5: Ohio State took the match with a 15-8 fifth-set win. As the two teams tied through 5-5, OSU used two points to maintain the lead throughout the rest of the set. Paige Tapp pushed the score to a 9-7 deficit, while Hannah Tapp had a kill for a 12-8 score, but OSU finished off the set with a Gopher service error, an ace and a Gopher ballhandling error for a 15-8 final.
