Taylor Wodnick emerged as the hero in the University of Minnesota's 1-0 double overtime victory over No. 25-ranked Michigan in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Big Ten Women's Soccer Tournament held in West Lafayette at the Purdue Soccer Complex. Wodnick scored the lone goal of the match in the 109th minute to eliminate the Wolverines from the conference tournament and lead the Gophers to a semifinal match up with border rival Wisconsin on Friday afternoon.
Through the 109 minutes of play, the Gophers outshot Michigan 13-10 while sophomore goalkeeper Tarah Hobbs collected two saves on the evening. Wodnick tallied the Gophers first shot on goal in the 7th minute but sophomore Simone Kolander fired a loose ball at Michigan's goalkeeper in the 82nd minute to record Minnesota's best scoring opportunity in regulation.
After a scoreless 90 minutes, Minnesota junior Haley Helverson and Kolander teamed up to enter a pair of shots in the first overtime period while Michigan's Jessica Heifetz recorded the Wolverines' lone shot in the ten minute span. In the second overtime period, Ani Sarkisian sent the lone Wolverine ball wide of the net in the 105th minute of play.
With the season on the line, sophomore Josee Stiever sent a ball in to the far post from the left side of the field and found Wodnick who headed the ball into the net to score the golden goal with just a minute remaining in the second overtime period.
The match marked the eighth overtime appearance of the season for the Golden Gophers who hold a 4-3-1 record when appearing in extra minutes. The 1-0 victory also marked the Gophers eighth shutout victory of the season. This was the first overtime of the tournament. With the victory, Minnesota improved to 11-8-1 on the season.
NOTES
In the 45th minute of play, junior Jen Larrick was awarded a yellow card.
In three of the four quarterfinal games, the lower seed advanced.

GOPHER STAND OUT PERFORMANCES
The golden goal by senior Taylor Wodnick marks her fourth goal of the season and second in double overtime (first was in the 101st minute of play vs. Illinois on Oct. 12). Wodnick's goal propelled the Gophers to the semifinal round of play. In addition to four goals in 2014, Wodnick has also tallied one assist for a total of nine points.
Sophomore Josee Stiever continued her successful sophomore campaign as she added another assist to her extensive 2014 resume. Stiever leads the team with six goals paired with five assists for 17 points. She is just one point behind Kolander who sits atop the Gophers list for points this season.
Sophomore Simone Kolander led the Maroon and Gold with 5 shots on Wednesday evening while junior Haley Helverson fired four. Both Kolander and Helverson had one shot on frame.
Freshman Sydney Squires and junior Jen Larrick, who both played off the bench for the Gophers, tallied one shot each during the contest.
Sophomore goalkeeper Tarah Hobbs collected two saves in Wednesday's match to bring her season total to 87.
