B1G Honors 18 Gophers for Academics

MINNEAPOLIS - The Big Ten Conference has recognized 18 Golden Gopher women's cross country student-athletes as 2014 Academic All-Big Ten honorees, the B1G announced Wednesday morning.

The Big Ten recognized a total of 977 fall sports student-athletes who have been named to the academic all-conference team. In total, 74 Gopher student-athletes from five teams were honored for their academic success led by the Gopher football team wiht 30 honorees. Women's cross country (18) and women's soccer (15) both had double-figure honorees as well.

To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

Liz Berkholtz, Ashlie Decker and Becca Dyson lead the way as three-time Academic All-Big Ten honorees. Six other Gophers are repeat honorees: Megan Bailey (2013, 2014), Kate Bucknam (2012, 2014), Lauren Domski (2012, 2014), Haley Johnson (2013, 2014), Hannah Trasser (2012, 2014) and Kaila Urick (2013, 2014).

Nine Gophers earned their first academic distinction from the Big Ten this fall. All seven of Minnesota's NCAA Championship runners received academic All-Big Ten honors: Danielle Anderson, Berkholtz, Bucknam, Decker, Dyson, Johnson and Urick, and two alternates were honored in Jamie Piepenburg and Madeline Strandemo.
