Getting into the Giving Spirit

Earlier this week, Gopher wrestlers headed out to do some holiday shopping, but they didn't bring along lists of what they need to buy for their parents, siblings or friends. Each year, a donor to the Gopher Wrestling program gives money specifically for wrestlers to go out and shop for those in need and personally drop off the donated items at a local charity.
"We want to learn what it's like to give," said senior Scott Schiller, who organized this year's effort. "This donor wants us to understand what it means to give to people and how it affects them."
Schiller, a two-time All-American and currently the No. 2 nationally ranked wrestler at 197 pounds, researched local charities and chose People Serving People to receive this year's donations. The organization is the largest and most comprehensive, family-focused shelter in Minnesota, offering a broad range of on-site programs and services to assist homeless families.
The group of approximately 20 grapplers purchased items for people of all ages, ranging from toys for small children to toiletries for adults. The objective was to impact as many people as possible with the money they had to spend, and to make a difference in the lives of every member of the families staying at People Serving People.
"It's great to be able to give like that," said Schiller. "It gives you a lasting impression of why you should give and the great things that you can do when you do give to people."
The experience was documented for the latest episode of "Minnesota Wrestling: Through the Lens," a web series that offers family, friends and fans an unprecedented look into everything that makes the Golden Gopher wrestling program unique.
