Three Gophers Place at Midlands

After four Gophers - all competing unattached - advanced through the first day of the Midlands, three continued on in the tournament's final day to place at their respective weights. Those placing in the event were Ethan Lizak (125), Seth Lange (149) and Pat Smith (165).
Lizak, a freshman currently redshirting for the Gophers, placed the highest among the group, taking seventh place at 125. Lizak began the tournament with a pair of wins to advance to the quarterfinals before a defeat last night sent him to the consolation bracket. On the backside, he went 2-1 today, including a major decision over David White of Binghampton to claim seventh.
Redshirt senior Lange followed a similar path to his younger teammate, winning his first two matches yesterday before falling in the quarters. After a win to begin today, he lost a pair of close matches to ranked opponents, ultimately finishing eighth.
Smith, a sixth-year senior, took a tough route to placing at 165. After losing his opening match, Smith won three straight to finish yesterday and began his day today with a fourth consecutive win before falling in back-to-back matches to place eighth.
