Gophers Fall to Louisville in Four Sets

The No. 12 University of Minnesota fell to Louisville, tonight at the Sports Pavilion, 3-1 (25-21, 25-27, 27-25, 28-26). With the loss, the Golden Gophers drop to 1-1 early this season after they defeated Notre Dame in the season opener.
Sarah Wilhite led the Gopher charge when she recorded a match and career-high 25 kills and 19 digs. Daly Santana also had a double double with 16 kills and 13 digs, followed by Katie Schau with 53 assists and 12 digs. Dalianliz Rosado had 20 digs and three assists. Adrianna Nora had 10 kills, hit a team-best .320 and an ace.
Minnesota plays in the Yale Tournament, Sept. 5-6 where it will face Yale Boston College and Albany.
Set One: The Cardinals led early at 9-6 and again at 15-12. Minnesota, however, rattled off three points to tie the set at 15 with a Louisville service error, a block by Schau and Hannah Tapp, followed by a kill from Hannah Tapp. Minnesota trailed 19-16, but again would tie the set at 19 on back-to-back kills by Nora and a block by Hannah Tapp and Nora. However, Louisville would finish off the set with a kill from Maya McClendon, three-straight aces to push it to set point and a kill by Tess Clark to take a 1-0 lead.
Set Two: Minnesota capitalized at the very end of the second set to earn its first two-point lead of the match to win, 27-25. In the second set, there were 20 tie scores and 10 lead changes as the Gophers hit .262 to Louisville's .281. Louisville would take a 15-13 into the first media timeout. Louisville went up 17-15, but the Gophers again battled back to tie the set at 17. The two teams would trade points until Louisville forced two set points at 24-23 and 25-24. However, Minnesota would get a kill from Nora to tie it at 25, a kill from Santana and a kill from Wilhite to close out the set and win 27-25.
Set Three: Louisville erased an early 7-3 lead to come back and win the third set, 27-25 and take a 2-1 lead. Minnesota went on an early run on Santana's serve rotation to go up 7-3 and forced Louisville to take a timeout. Louisville, would eventually battle back and tie the set at 14. The two teams would trade points until Louisville went up 23-20. Minnesota took a timeout and would tie it back at 23 on a kill from Wilhite. Louisville would go up 24-23 before Wilhite added another kill. Minnesota would then have set point on a kill from Wilhite before Louisville tied it up again. The Cardinals closed out the set with back-to-back kills to win the set.
Set Four: Louisville took the fourth set and the match on a 28-26 set win. With 14 tie scores and five lead changes, the Cardinals finished off the set with back-to-back kills to win the match. Tied at 20, Louisville had a kill from Katie George and a block to go up, 22-20. Nora and Wilhite, however, would provide kills and pushed it to set point, but a Gopher serving error knotted it back at 25. After tying again at 26, the Cardinals closed out the match with the two kills.
