Santana's Career Night Propels Gophers to Win

Daly Santana propelled the No. 18 University of Minnesota volleyball team to a three-set win over Yale, tonight in New Haven, Connecticut. The Gophers improve to 2-1 on the season and opened the invite with the win (25-23, 25-11 and 25-19). Minnesota continues the tournament tomorrow when it plays Boston College and Albany tomorrow at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. CT
Santana produced a career-high 21 kills and hit .444. She also recorded her second double double of the season when she had 11 digs, added two solo blocks, two assists and three aces. Sarah Wilhite had 10 kills in 31 swings, while Paige Tapp had eight kills and hit .538. Adrianna Nora added seven kills for .389 clip. Katie Schau added a match-high 33 assists, while Dalianliz Rosado had six digs, four assists and an ace. Alyssa Goehner had eight digs and an ace, both career highs in her young Gopher career.
As a team, the Gophers hit .378 for the match, including .452, a season best, in the first set. Minnesota held Yale to a .208 hitting percentage, including just a .036 in the second set. The Gophers added six blocks to the Bulldogs’ four and had 50 kills to their 35.
Set 1: Minnesota erased a 19-15 deficit to come back and win, 25-23. Minnesota trailed four points until the Gophers came out of a timeout and received kills from Hannah Tapp and Nora. Minnesota pulled within one at 21-22 with a kill from Santana. The Bulldogs took a timeout, but couldn’t contain Santana as she added back-to-back kills to put the Gophers up, 23-22. After a Yale kill from Kaitlyn Gibbons, Hannah Tapp put the Gophers at set point, while Santana closed out the set with her 10th kill of the set. Santana hit .444 in that set, while Nora hit .600.
Set 2: The Gophers maintained control of the second set from the get-go for a 25-11 win. Minnesota continued to hit well when it hit .387, while it held Yale to just six kills in 28 attempts for a .036 hitting clip. On Santana’s serve rotation, Minnesota opened the second set with a 4-0 lead as she delivered three aces. The Gophers took a 10-2 lead on back-to-back kills from Wilhite and Paige Tapp. On her fifth kill of the set, Santana put Minnesota up, 17-5, while Nora added a kill for a commanding 19-8 lead. A Yale service error gave the Gophers set point, while a block by Molly Lohman closed out the set win.
Set 3: Santana added another six kills, while Paige Tapp and Wilhite provided four as the Gophers won, 25-19. Minnesota had three blocks in the set and added 15 kills. Tied early at 4-4, Minnesota went on a 9-1 run to take a 13-5 lead. Mollie Rogers would close Yale's deficit to 15-10, but the Gophers had two kills by Wilhite and a Yale attack error to go up, 20-13. Minnesota closed out the set with Santana in the lead. She held a block for a 23-17 score, a kill for match point at 24-18 and ended the match with her 21st kill of the night.
