Gophers Win in Four Over Milwaukee

The No. 19 University of Minnesota volleyball team was down, 0-1, but came back to win. 3-1, this morning over Milwaukee at the Sports Pavilion. Falling in the first set, 26-28, Minnesota came back to take it in four, 25-22, 25-18 and 25-23 to improve to 6-1 this season. The Gophers play Iowa State, tonight at 7 p.m., or 30 minutes following the 5 p.m. match.
Erica Handley provided a match-best 49 assists and tied for the team lead in 16 digs and five blocks. Daly Santana hit .306 when she had 19 kills in 49 attempts and had nine digs. Paige Tapp had 11 kills in 22 swings for a .318 hitting clip, while she helped the Gophers with five blocks. Alyssa Goehner started as the Gopher libero and tied Handley with 16 digs and two aces.
Set 1: Both teams tied the set 10 times and had four lead changes before the Panthers took the set, 28-26. The Panthers jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but the Gophers came back to tie the set at 6-6. The two teams exchanged points and lead changes until Minnesota was up, 24-22. The Panthers, however, battled back and tied the set on two kills. Tied at 25, Sarah Wilhite put the Gophers up, 26-25, but Milwaukee came back with three-straight kills for the set win.
Set 2: Minnesota tied the set off of four kills from both Santana and Wilhite, while Goehner had seven digs. Santana hit .333 for the set when she had 12 swings and connected on four. The set was close until Minnesota went on a 6-1 run, capped off by a Paige Tapp ace. Minnesota would close out the set with an ace by Goehner, a kill by Wilhite and an block by Handley and Paige Tapp for the set win.
Set 3: Santana commanded the third set when she hit .545, while Handley added 15 assists as the Gophers hit .400 in the third. Tied at the 12-12 mark, Minnesota would go on a 6-1 run to cushion its lead to 18-13. Minnesota would get a kill from Wilhite for its 21st point and an ace by Goehner for her 22nd point. The Gophers added a Wilhite kill and a Milwaukee attack error to put it at set point, while a block by Handley and Paige Tapp solidified the set win.
Set 4: The Gophers closed out the match in four with a 25-23 fourth-set win. Minnesota opened the set with a 10-3 lead before Milwaukee battled back and eventually tied it at 18-18. Minnesota and Milwaukee would tie it as late as 22-22 before the Gophers would close out the set, with kills from Paige Tapp and Wilhite to win the match.
