Gophers Sweep Duquesne to Open Tourney

Minnesota was led by Sarah Wilhite, who had 12 kills, and Paige Tapp, who hit .875 when she had seven kills in eight attempts and no errors. Wilhite and Tapp also each have four block assists. Erica Handley had a match-high 30 assists, while Daly Santana had seven kills, a team high nine digs in two sets played. Liberos Alyssa Goehner and Dalianliz Rosado had eight and five digs respectively. As a team, Minnesota outblocked the Dukes, 7-5 and hit .275 to .117. The Gophers also provided five aces in 73 attempts, while Duquesne had one ace in 55 chances.
Notes:
 -Paige Tapp improved her career high hitting clip as she produced an .875 efficiency (7-0-8). She also had two aces in the match, as did Katie Schau.
 -The match marked the third time Wilhite has led the team in kills, second straight when she had 18 against Iowa State.
 -Goehner saw action as both a libero and an outside hitter today. As the starting libero in the first two sets, Goehner had six of her eight kills. In the third, she moved as an outside hitter and had three kills in 10 attempts.
 -Minnesota is now 4-0 this season in three-set matches.
 
Set 1: The Gophers and Dukes were tied early at 7-7, but Minnesota went on a 7-2 run, primarily on Goehner’s serve rotation. Minnesota capped off the run on a Santana kill to put the score at 14-9. A kill by Wilhite cushioned the lead to 17-11. A Paige Tapp and Handley added a block for a 20-14 lead, which with a forced Duquesne to take a timeout. Minnesota closed out the set with two Paige Tapp kills, followed by three Duquesne errors to go up, 1-0. In the first set alone, Paige Tapp had five kills in six chances. 
Set 2:  Minnesota took a 2-0 lead on another 25-17 win. With the Gophers leading 6-5, Wilhite added a kill. Immediately after on her serve rotation, the Gophers rattled off a six-point run. In that span, Santana and Hannah Tapp each had a kill for a 10-5 lead as the Dukes took a timeout. However, out of the break, the Gophers continued the run with another kill from Santana, a block from Handley and Hannah Tapp and an ace by Wilhite. The Gophers earned their 19th point on an ace by Paige Tapp. Minnesota went on another run during Schau’s rotation with a kill from Wilhite and a block from her and Hannah Tapp to put the match at 23-12. After the Dukes extended the set to 24-17 on a kill, Minnesota won the set off a Duquesne attack error.
 
 
Set 3: Minnesota held its most efficient hitting mark in the third set to win the match. The Gophers hit .355, paced by Wilhite, who had six kills and hit .444. Adrianna Nora also hit .449 with four kills. Goehner moved from libero to outside, while Rosado became the libero for the third set. The Gophers and Dukes battled through 12 tie scores and three lead changes before Minnesota took the lead at the 18-17 mark. Tied at 17, Wilhite added a kill, followed by a Duke attack error and a Schau ace. Duquesne took a timeout, but Schau and the Gophers added another ace, followed by a block from Wilhite and Paige Tapp. The Gophers closed out the match with a kill from Goehner and a kill from Nora.
