Gophers Sweep IPFW to Conclude Rocket Invite

Sarah Wilhite was named the Rocket Invite MVP when she had 42 kills in the tourney, had 4.67 kills per set and hit .386. Daly Santana and Adrianna Nora were also named to the all-tournament team. Santana had 34 kills and had 4.25 kps, while Nora hit .385 and had 24 kills. 
The Gophers made quick work of IPFW as they won the match in an hour and 13 minutes. Minnesota did not commit an attack error until midway through the second set as it hit .353 as a team. The Gophers were paced by Wilhite, who had 16 kills, hit .462, while Santana had 15 kills and hit .375. Nora was also in double-digit kills as she had 10 kills and hit .304. Paige Tapp collected a career-high 10 blocks in the match. Alyssa Goehner added a match-high 14 digs. Erica Handley posted a 37-assist day and added 10 digs and three blocks.
As a team, the Gophers had 47 kills to IPFW’s 32, out blocked the Mastadons 16-5 and had a 48-40 dig advantage. While hitting an efficient .353, the Gophers held IPFW to a .103 clip.
Minnesota opens Big Ten Conference play on Wednesday night as the Gophers host Ohio State, 7 p.m., at the Sports Pavilion. The Gophers then host Penn State, Saturday, also at 7 p.m.
Set 1: Although IPFW started the set with a 3-0 lead, Minnesota erased the deficit quickly and tied the set at 5-5. As the two teams were tied at 7-7, Minnesota 7-0 run. On the serve rotation from Goehner, Wilhite had a kill, followed by a block by Santana and Paige Tapp and a kill from Santana as IPFW called a timeout. The Gophers came out of the break and continued its run on an IPFW error, back-to-back blocks and a kill by Santna. The Gophers would eventually take a 12-point lead on a Wilhite kill. The Gophers would close the set with another Wilhite kill as she had eight kills in eight attempts that set. As a team, the Gophers had 15 kills in 29 attempts for .519.
Set 2: After a tie score of 5-5, the Gophers led for the remainder of the set. Minnesota continued from the first set into the second when it did not commit an attack error until the 14-8 mark. Minnesota took a 17-10 lead on a Hannah Tapp kill. The Gophers went up by 10 on an IPFW attack error. The Gophers pushed the score to 22-12 on a Santana kill and gained their 23rd point on a service error. Nora posted a kill for set point, while Wilhite added a kill for the win. Minnesota held a 92 percent sideout ratio and hit .355.
Set 3: Minnesota used seven blocks in the third set to take it .25-23. Minnesota used a 5-1 run to open the score to 14-9. The Gophers would then go up, 16-11 on a Santana/H Tapp block. The Gophers were up 21-14 before IPFW came back to make a match of it and went on an 8-2 run. As the set was tied at 23, Minnesota was able to get a kill from Wilhite and a block from Santana and H Tapp to close out the match.
