With Kierra Smith's B1G Championship wins and Kiera Janzen's NCAA Championships performances, our number seven moment on the countdown of Top Ten Moments of the 2013-14 season include not one, but two Kier(r)as.
At the B1G Championships then sophomore Kierra Smith captured the gold in both the 100 breast and 200 breast. She took first in the 100 breast with a time of 59.80. Known for her distance breaststroke, Smith won the 200 breast with a time of 2:06.66, beating out the rest of the heat by over three seconds .
This summer at the Pan Pacific Championships, Smith was able to race a 2:23.32 , the fastest time in Minnesota's history and now the long course 200 breast record. Now ranked 7th in the world for the 200 meter breaststroke, Smith is ready to take on her remaining two seasons with the Golden Gophers.
During the NCAA Championships, Kiera Janzen was set to race her specialty - distance freestyle. Janzen placed 20th in the 200 free with a time of 1:46.46. In the 500 free Janzen finished with a time of 4:37.61 for 7th place. During the 1650 free, Janzen again took 7th place with a time of 15:57.38 for a new personal record . She was also a member of the 6th place 800 free relay team that included her, Jessica Plant, Tori Simenec and Lauren Votava. Janzen individually scored 24 points, the second most on the team, just behind diver Maggie Keefer.
With the 2014-15 season fast approaching, both Smith and Janzen will be ones to watch in the pool.
