Justin Smith has been hired as the new University of Minnesota assistant men's golf coach, head coach John Carlson announced Monday. Smith excelled on the course with the Gophers from 2001-04.

"As a three-time All-American and member of the 2002 national championship team for the Gophers, Justin is committed to continuing to strengthen our alumni support to the program and winning at the national level," Carlson said. "He brings a high level of knowledge in club/shaft technology, as well as teaching the game to elite players. Gopher golf is excited to welcome Justin and his wife, Trish, back to our program."

Smith was named to the All-America third-team once and honorable mention twice. He tied for fourth individually as the Gophers won the 2002 NCAA Championships. Smith had earlier tied for medalist honors at the 2002 NCAA Midwest Regional.

Smith also finished in the top 10 of three Big Ten Championships, helping the Gophers win conference titles in 2002 and 2003. He earned All-Big Ten and All-Big Ten Championships honors in both 2003 and 2004, years in which he served as team captain.

"The University of Minnesota men's golf team has provided me the opportunity to graduate from and compete for one of the nation's best golf programs," Smith said. "Now I have the opportunity to coach some of the best collegiate players in the country and give back to the university that provided me with so much. I am extremely excited to work with Coach Carlson and take this program to heights never imagined."

Following his collegiate career, Smith enjoyed success on the NGA and Web.com Tours. He won the NGA Tour's 2005 Players Turf Classic, 2006 Touchstone Energy Open and 2007 Guatemala International Open. Smith's top Web.com Tour finishes included second place in the 2009 Miccosukee Championship, ninth in the 2009 Christmas in October Presented by Kansas City Crusaders and 10th in the 2010 Chiquita Classic.

Most recently, Smith served as master clubfitter at 2nd Swing Golf. He trained and coached 2nd Swing's Minneapolis fitting staff and helped identify equipment that would best enhance individual golfers' abilities.

Smith earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota in 2004.
