Gophers Travel for Windon Memorial

The University of Minnesota men's golf team will play its second fall tournament at the Windon Memorial Classic in Skokie, Ill. Competitors will play 36 holes on Sunday, Sept. 21 starting at 7:30 a.m. The third round will start at 8 a.m. Monday, Sept. 22.
The Golden Gophers started their season with a fourth-place finish at the Gopher Invitational. They last played in the Windon Memorial in 2010. Minnesota won the event in 1994 (tied with Texas A&M), 1998 and 2003.
The travel squad: Jose Mendez and Tyler Lowenstein, who finished in the top 10 at the Gopher Invitational, were exempt from the Gophers' qualifying tournament. Matt Rachey, Rúnar Arnorsson and Daniel Luftspring will join them in the lineup. Rachey and Arnorsson automatically qualified, and Luftspring was a coaches' pick after finishing close behind Arnorsson. It will be Arnorsson and Luftspring's first collegiate event played counting toward the team score.
The field: Seven Big Ten teams- Minnesota, host Northwestern, Ohio State, Iowa, Purdue, Michigan and Wisconsin-are part of the 15-team field. Marquette, North Texas, Lamar, Tulsa, Notre Dame, St. John's, Tennessee and California complete the list of teams competing. Minnesota is 1-1 against teams in the field, having finished behind Cal and ahead of Notre Dame at the Gopher Invitational.
The course: Evanston Golf Club will have a par-70, 6,793-yard layout. The Donald Ross-designed course opened in 1917 and went through restoration in 2006.
Notes: *Jose Mendez has finished in the top-10 in eight of his first 13 collegiate tournaments.
