Brichacova Wins Top Invitational Singles Draw

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota women's tennis team completed its first tournament of the season Sunday as the Gopher Invitational came to an end. The Gophers went 6-2 in singles and 8-2 in doubles on the final day of the event and went 24-11 in singles and 28-9 in doubles on the weekend.
On the final day of play, Minnesota won three doubles titles to finish the tournament with six. In singles action, Tereza Brichacova downed Iowa's Shelby Talcott 6-2, 6-1 in the Minnesota Flight championship to win the Gopher Invitational's top singles draw for the second-straight year.
Brichacova also paired with Mehvish Safdar to win the top Sunday doubles flight, dropping only one game in the process. The duo defeated Kentucky's Kate Lanier and Stephanie Fox, 8-0, before taking down Ffion Davies and Tacy Haws-Lay of South Dakota State, 8-1.
Paula Rincon Otero and Julia Courter also found doubles success, beating tandems from Eastern Michigan and Iowa to win their draw. Aria Lambert and Kendall Heitzner accomplished the same feat with wins against combinations from North Dakota and Northern Illinois.
In singles play, both Lambert and Safdar fell in their flight championships after starting the weekend with three wins apiece.
The Gophers went 5-0 in consolation singles matches. In the Gopher Flight, Caroline Ryba swept UK's Stephanie Fox, 6-1, 6-1. In the Maroon Flight, Jessika Mozia, Paula Rincon Otero, and Kendall Heitzner won the fifth, ninth, and 11th-place matches, respectively.
Alexandra Bergman also capped her tournament with a victory, outlasting the Wildcats' Kate Lanier, 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (4).
Up next for Minnesota, Brichacova will travel to Pacific Palisades, Calif. to compete in the ITA All-American Championships. The Gophers will then play in the ITA Central Region Championships in Stillwater, Okla.
