2015 SCHEDULE
MINNEAPOLIS - Head coach Mike Burns and the University of Minnesota men's gymnastics team have released their 2015 schedule which includes four home meets, a west coast trip to meet international competition and annual trips to the Windy City Invitational in Chicago and Winter Cup in Las Vegas.
The Golden Gophers will host their annual Alumni Meet at the Sports Pavilion to close the preseason on Saturday, Jan. 10 at the Sports Pavilion.
Minnesota will open the regular season at the Windy City Invitational the following Saturday in Chicago, Ill. The Gophers finished fourth at the annual season opener last year as Ellis Mannon lead the way for the Maroon and Gold with the all-around title.
The team opens its home season on Saturday, Jan. 24 when they host Air Force at the Sports Pavilion at 5 p.m. Minnesota will also host UIC and Nebraska (Feb. 7) as well as Iowa and the Minnesota Club Team (March 7) in front of their home crowd. Both meets begin at 7 p.m.
Minnesota will see the best of collegiate gymnastics and international competition on the road throughout the season with stops at the University of Illinois (Jan. 31), Iowa with Nebraska (Feb. 14), Stanford with Cal, Japan and Canada (Feb. 28) and Nebraska with Iowa and Penn State (March 15) before wrapping up the season March 27-28 at the Big Ten Championships at Penn State University.
Senior Ellis Mannon and freshman Yaro Pochinka will represent the Maroon and Gold at the Winter Cup in Las Vegas on Feb. 19 and 21. The two Gophers qualified for the competition at the P&G Championships this past summer.
When the Gophers head to Palo Alto, Calif. on Feb. 28, they will see a mix of NCAA and international talent as they compete against Stanford, Cal, Japan and Canada.
"I am very excited about our schedule this year," said Burns. "Heading to the west coast for the first time in several years will give us some great experience against teams we'll be competing against at the NCAA Championships in April. The international experience will also be a new twist that will be extremely valuable for our team."
The Sports Pavilion will serve as a host for two junior meets in conjunction with two of Minnesota's regular season home meets. The John Roethlisberger Iceberg Invite will be held on Feb. 7 and the MIGSP Junior Meet will be held on March 7.
The season will conclude in Norman, OK as the Gophers compete at the NCAA Championships April 9-11. Last season, Mannon won the NCAA Pommel Horse title after a successful season where he also earned a Big Ten Pommel Horse Championship.
"I feel this schedule will give our team the much needed experience to prepare us for the championship part of the season where we plan to be at our best when it counts most," said Burns.
General admission single-meet tickets will be available at mygophersports.com or by calling 1-800-U-Gopher or 612-624-8080.
