Jan. 18, 2015 MINNEAPOLIS - Carlie Wagner nailed a jumper with 37 seconds to play to lift the No. 23 University of Minnesota (16-2, 5-1) women's basketball team to a 65-61 victory over visiting Indiana (12-5, 2-4) Sunday afternoon in Big Ten Conference action at Williams Arena. It marks the first time in program history that the Gophers have posted 16 wins through their first 18 games of a season.
Wagner also gave the Maroon and Gold its first lead of the contest, 60-59, with 1:18 remaining on the clock when she drained back-to-back clutch three-pointers. The two baskets followed a 5-0 run from the Hoosiers that put Minnesota down by five points at 2:52 to play.
The rookie finished the contest with 13 points and four rebounds, while senior Shae Kelley paced the Gophers with 19 points, 13 rebounds and four steals for her second-straight double-double and seventh of the year. Kelley capped off the victory and put Minnesota ahead by four points when she made the front half of a 1-and-1 with just one second to play.
Amanda Zahui B. had 11 points and seven rebounds despite running into foul trouble for the second-straight game, and Mikayla Bailey made three critical three-pointers in the first half to finish with nine points, four rebounds and four assists.
Wagner, Bailey and Shayne Mullaney, who concluded the night with six assists, were efficient for Minnesota from beyond the arch, as the trio combine for a .438 (7-16) three-point field goal percentage, which included a .455 (5-11) mark in the first half. The Gophers also won the battle on the boards, 34-30, and shot .500 (24-48) or better for the fifth time this season and second time in Big Ten play.
Minnesota and Indiana went into halftime tied at 36-36 thanks to an 8-0 run over the last 3:39 of the opening stanza for the Gophers. The home team trailed the Hoosiers by eight points twice in first half.
The Maroon and Gold will host Purdue in the second game of the teams' Big Ten season series at Williams Arena Thursday at 7 p.m. The Gophers defeated the Boilermakers, 81-68, at Mackey Arena in the first game of the series on Jan. 1.
