CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 73 Minnesota women's tennis team dropped a 4-1 match against 59th-ranked Boston College in its final ITA Kick-Off Weekend competition at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C. Sunday.
The loss dropped the team's record to 2-2 on the season with both losses coming against ranked opponents.
The match's doubles competition finished in similar fashion to Minnesota's doubles competition against North Carolina in its last match. The Eagles opened the dual with a 6-2 win at the third spot before the Gophers' junior duo of Julia Courter and Paula Rincon-Otero responded with a 6-3 victory at the second spot. At No. 1, BC clinched the 1-0 lead with a tight, 7-5 win by Jessica Wacnik and Lexi Borr over Tereza Brichacova and Mehvish Safdar.
Courter and Rincon-Otero are now 4-0 together at No. 2 doubles on the spring and are 6-1 as a pairing in 2014-15.
Boston College jumped out to a 3-0 edge after singles wins by No. 61-ranked Wacnik against Brichacova at No. 1 and Emily Safron against Courter at No. 6.
Aria Lambert closed the gap with a win in the fifth flight, but BC sealed its first victory of the year when, at No. 4, Assiya Dair defeated Maja Vujic in three sets. Caroline Ryba and Jessika Mozia, Nos. 2 and 3 respectively, did not finish their singles matches. Both were stopped in the third set.
Lambert's singles victory was the 65th of her career, tying her for 24th on Minnesota's all-time singles wins list.
The Gophers resume their season next Saturday with a match at Oregon. Minnesota will then play No. 67 Louisville and Marshall in West Virginia before their next home match, Feb. 20 against Drake.
