Gophers Put Up Seven in Win Over Badgers

MADISON, Wis. (GopherSports.com) – The Gopher Hockey program put up a season-high seven goals including four in less than two minutes during the second period to open this weekend’s Border Battle series with Wisconsin with a 7-5 win at the Kohl Center.
Thirteen Gophers had points in the win including six Maroon & Gold skaters with two points each while Adam Wilcox made 27 saves in his 100th career game for Minnesota.
Minnesota (12-9-2 overall, 3-2-2-0 Big Ten) rebounded from a one-goal and a two-goal deficit in the first half of action before erupting with four-straight goals midway through the second period in a span of just 1:40. In fact, the final three goals of the stretch occurred in just 39 seconds – missing the school record for fastest three goals in a game by nine seconds (March 1, 1947 in a 15-2 win at Colorado College).
Seth Ambroz scored twice for the Maroon & Gold to end the night with five tallies on the season while nine of his 33 career goals have now come against the Badgers. The senior forward pulled Minnesota out of a one-goal hole with a power-play goal in the first period and added his second of the night during Minnesota’s offensive onslaught in the second.
Vinni Lettieri opened up Minnesota’s scoring in the second with his fourth goal of the year at 11:00 followed by Jake Bischoff’s second of the season for the equalizer at 12:01. Ambroz’s second of the night gave Minnesota its first lead of the game at 12:27 while Leon Bristedt’s third goal of the year made it two-goal lead for Minnesota. Wisconsin (2-16-3, 0-6-1-1) cut the lead back to one late in the second, but Taylor Cammarata and Hudson Fasching added goals in the third to lock up the win for the Gophers.
Wilcox moved to 12-8-3 on the season in the win and now holds 63 career wins – one away from tying John Blue for fourth on Minnesota’s all-time wins list. Joel Rumpel made 28 saves in the loss for Wisconsin.
Along with Ambroz’s pair of goals, Brady Skjei, Sam Warning andTravis Boyd all tallied a pair of assists in the win while Bischoff and Fasching each had a goal and an assist.
Minnesota’s top-rated power play finished the game 2-for-3 while the penalty kill went 4-for-5. The Gophers also held a 35-32 shot advantage.
The Gophers and Badgers meet for the fourth and final time in the 2014-15 regular season on Saturday at 7:10 p.m. CT at the Kohl Center. The series finale will be televised live on the Big Ten Network with online stream available via BTN2Go. Radio broadcast for the action will be on 1500 ESPN and the Gopher Radio Network.
