Herauf Breaks Pentathlon Program Record

MINNEAPOLIS - Redshirt junior Jess Herauf broke the Minnesota program record in the pentathlon with 4,289 points and won the event as the Minnesota women's track & field team competed in day one of the Jack Johnson Classic at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse Friday.
Herauf's program record came with four first-place finishes in the five pentathlon events. She recorded career bests in the high jump (1.74m) and shot put (13.68m) and also won the long jump at 5.85m and the 800m in 2:16.17. Herauf placed third in the 60m hurdles at 8.89 seconds.
Along with Herauf's program record, two Gopher pole vaulters improved their marks in the all-time ranks with new career-best heights. Katie Murgic and Cami Gilson both cleared 4.11m for the first time, indoors or outdoors. Murgic placed second and Gilson was fourth, and the duo is currently tied for fifth among all-time Gopher pole vaulters.
Joining Herauf in the pentathlon were Amanda Beckman in seventh and Alex Beckman in eighth. Amanda Beckman's 3,298 points were highlighted by a fifth-place finish in the shot put (10.82m). Fellow redshirt junior Alex Beckman's 3,109 points included placing second in the shot put (12.23m) and tying for fourth in the high jump (1.65m).
On the track, redshirt junior Megan Bailey crushed her previous career-best time in the 5,000m, placing seventh in 18:08.49 and leading fellow Gophers Marnie Kinnaird (18:27.88), Melissa Cabak (18:29.48) and Sarah Klecker (18:39.24).
Event finals for the pentathlon, heptathlon, women's 5,000m, women's 200m, men's 200m, women's long jump, men's long jump (open and invitational), women's pole vault, men's shot put (unseeded), women's shot put (unseeded) and men's pole vault (unseeded) were held on Friday.
The Jack Johnson Classic continues Saturday at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse. Field events begin with the women's weight throw at 9:30 a.m. CT, and the first event on the track is the women's 3,000-meter run at 11:05 a.m. CT.
