Singles Lead Gophers to First Road Win

EUGENE, Ore. - The No. 72-ranked Minnesota women's tennis team dropped the doubles competition, but rallied from behind for a 4-3 win against Oregon Saturday. The victory, which came at the Student Tennis Center in Eugene, Ore., was the Gophers' first away from the Baseline Tennis Center in 2015. They finished the month of January with a 3-2 record.
The all-time series between Minnesota and Oregon now favors the Gophers, 5-1. The Maroon and Gold defeated the Ducks, 6-1, at home in 2014.
Oregon started fast with wins at the top two doubles spots. Alyssa Tobita and Nia Rose defeated Tereza Brichacova and Mehvish Safdar at No. 1 before Nicole Long and Marlou Kluiving handed juniors Julia Courter and Paula Rincon-Otero their first doubles loss of the spring season.
Senior Brichacova knotted the score in singles with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph against Rose at the top spot. Freshman Caroline Ryba then improved her dual-match singles record to 3-0 by taking down Long by the same score.
Rincon-Otero put Minnesota on the cusp of victory with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 6, her team-leading 11th win of 2014-15. Aria Lambert then secured the team win in two sets at No. 5. Lambert is now 4-1 on the spring and has 66 career singles victories, tying her for 23rd on the school's career singles wins list with Michaela Havelkova.
The Ducks closed out the match with a super tiebreaker win at No. 3 singles and by taking a 6-3, 7-5 decision at No. 4.
The Gophers will complete a string of five-straight road matches with matches against No. 64 Louisville Feb. 14 and Marshall Feb. 15 in Huntington, W.V. They return home the following Friday, Feb. 20, to play Drake.
