MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) - For the first time since the 2009-10 season, the No. 8/9 Gopher Hockey program fell in its season opener, dropping a 3-0 contest to Vermont at Mariucci Arena.
Freshman goaltender Eric Schierhorn made his first career start for the Maroon & Gold on Saturday night, stopping 24 saves on 26 shots. Mario Puskarich scored twice for the Catamounts while Jonathan Turk added an empty-net goal.
Vermont (1-0-0 overall, 0-0-0 Hockey East) jumped out to an early lead with a goal late in the first period when Puskarich had his shot trickle over Schierhorn's shoulder and into the net with just under 10 seconds remaining in the opening stanza. Brady Shaw and Alexx Privitera assisted on the goal.
Puskarich tallied another odd goal 4:45 into the third period when he knocked in his own rebound from near the goal line to put the Catamounts up 2-0. Trey Phillips assisted on the goal.
The Catamounts capped off the night with an empty-net goal from Turk with a minute remaining in the game off an assist from Liam Coughlin.
Minnesota (0-1-0, 0-0-0-0 Big Ten) put 24 shots on goal in the contest but couldn't beat Vermont goaltender Mike Santaguida, who picked up the shutout to open the season.
The Gophers return to action with a nonconference, home-and-home series with Minnesota Duluth next weekend. The Gophers host the Bulldogs at Mariucci Arena on Friday, Oct. 16 before heading to Duluth for the series finale on Saturday, Oct. 17. Both games are set for 7 p.m. CT.
