Gophers Sweep Rutgers, 3-0

The No. 11 University of Minnesota volleyball team earned a 3-0 win over Rutgers, today, in New Brunswick, N.J. The Golden Gophers won 25-11, 25-17, 25-18, as they improve to 13-3 overall record and a 5-1 Big Ten record.
As a team, Minnesota hit .250 to Rutgers’ .082 and had 43 kills to the Scarlet Knights' 31. The Gophers added 11 blocks to Rutgers’ 8 and had a 62-57 dig advantage. Daly Santana had 10 kills, Paige Tapp and Alyssa Goehner each had nine, while Hannah Tapp had six and hit .385. Dalianliz Rosado had 22 digs, followed by Santana with 12 and Goehner with 10. Paige Tapp also had a solo block and five block assists.
Minnesota plays back-to-back matches against border rival, No. 16 Wisconsin next week. The Gophers visit Madison, Wis., to take on the Badgers Wednesday night at 7 p.m. Minnesota then hosts the Badgers, Saturday, Oct. 17, at 8 p.m. (note time change) at the Sports Pavilion. Both matches will be streamed on BTN Plus.
Set 1: The Gophers hit .280 in the first set and had four blocks to win, 25-11. Minnesota opened up the match with a 10-5 lead as Rutgers called a timeout. Minnesota, however, came out of the break with a kill from Paige Tapp and continued with a solo block from Goehner as the Gophers would later take a 15-5 lead with seven points coming off Rosado’s serve rotation. Paige Tapp added back-to-back points as Minnesota led 17-6, which forced Rutgers to take its second timeout. The Gophers continued to pour on the pressure and took a 22-9 lead off a solo block from Hannah Tapp. Minnesota closed out the set with a block from Hannah Tapp and Maddie Beal to go up, 1-0.
Set 2: Minnesota had 17 kills in the second set and hit .310 en route to a 25-17 set win. The Gophers went up, 6-1 in the first set off a kill from Alyssa Goehner. Minnesota pushed the lead to 11-4 as Rutgers used its first timeout. With the Gophers leading 12-6, Rutgers went on a 6-1 run before Daly Santana responded and added the side out with a kill at 14-12. Starting with Santana’s kill, Minnesota went on a 5-0 run for an 18-12 lead as Rutgers called a timeout. Leading 22-16 off a Goehner kill, Minnesota had a kill from Santana, a kill from Paige Tapp and a Goehner kill for a 25-17 win and a 2-0 lead.
Set 3: Minnesota closed match with a 25-18 third set win. Trailing 4-6, Minnesota strung together four-straight, capped off by a Sarah Wilhite kill for an 8-6 lead. Minnesota led 14-12 before the Scarlet Knights tied it up at 14 and again at 15 and 16 before the Gophers took a two-point lead off a kill and a solo block from Paige Tapp. As Rutgers took a timeout, the Gophers added another block from Wilhite and P Tapp for a 19-16 lead. With the Minnesota lead at 21-17, Rutgers used its second timeout. The Gophers would later close out set and match with three-straight kills from Santana.
