Final Stats

The No. 11 University of Minnesota volleyball team earned a five-set win over Wisconsin, tonight, in Madison, Wis. The Golden Gophers fell in the first set, 11-25, won the second and third sets, 26-24, 25-16, fell in the fourth, 24-26, but won the fifth, 15-11. With the win, the Gophers improve to 14-3 overall and 6-1 in the Big Ten Conference.

Despite Minnesota being outhit .155 to .147, the Gophers hit .333 in the fifth and deciding set. Daly Santana had 20 kills and completed the double-double with 15 digs. Paige Tapp had 10 kills, Hannah Tapp had eight, while Molly Lohman had five kills in seven attempts (hit .571). Lohman and Hannah Tapp had eight blocks, while Paige Tapp had six. As a team, Minnesota had 15 blocks to Wisconsin's 12. Samantha Seliger-Swenson had 45 assists, while Dalianliz Rosado added 17 digs.

Minnesota and Wisconsin compete in the re-match on Saturday, this time at the Sports Pavilion, 8 p.m.

Set 1: The Badgers hit .361 in the first to take a 25-11 set win and a 1-0 lead. Wisconsin jumped out to a 6-3 lead before Paige Tapp had a kill for a side out. As the Badgers took a 10-4 lead, Minnesota called a timeout. The Gophers responded with a kill from Paige Tapp. Wisconsin later pushed the lead to 17-7 as the Gophers took another timeout. Wisconsin later took a 21-10 lead. Paige Tapp would again get a kill for Minnesota's 11th point, but Wisconsin took the set, 25-11.

Set 2: The Gophers tied up the match with a 26-24 second-set win. Minnesota took an 8-5 lead off a Daly Santana kill. Wisconsin pulled within one, but a Gopher block by Paige Tapp and Lohman pushed the lead back to two at 10-8. Wisconsin, however, tied up the set at 13 and took the lead 14-13 off back-to-back blocks. Minnesota responded with three-straight points to tie the set and take a two-point lead at 16-14 before Wisconsin called a timeout. Santana had back-to-back kills before the Badgers committed a hitting error, which forced Wisconsin to call a timeout. The Badgers tied up the set, but Minnesota came back with three points, off a Lohman kill, a Lohman/H Tapp block and a Santana ace to take a 19-16 lead. The Gophers pushed the lead to 21-17 off a Hannah Tapp kill and a Wisconsin attack error to lead, 21-17, before Wisconsin used its second timeout. Back-to-back kills by Wisconsin cut the Gopher lead to two as Minnesota called a timeout. As Minnesota lead 24-20, the Badgers added four-straight to tie the set at 24. Minnesota, however, finished off the set with kills from Santana and Paige Tapp to tie the match at 1-1.

Set 3: The Gophers took a 2-1 lead of a 25-16 third set win. Minnesota hit a match-best .258 (11-3-31), while it limited Wisconsin to just nine kills, 11 errors in 37 attempts for a -.054 hitting clip. Minnesota opened the third set with a 9-4 lead, capped off with a Paige Tapp/Wilhite block. Minnesota later took an 11-6 lead off a Wisconsin attack error, which forced the Badgers to use their first timeout. Minnesota came out of the break with another block to take a 12-6 early lead. A Santana kill put the Gophers up, 14-9, while a block put the Gophers up, 16-10. Minnesota took a 17-11 lead off a Hannah Tapp kill, followed by an 18-11 lead as Wisconsin called a timeout. Minnesota later took a 20-14 lead off a Wilhite kill (from Rosado). Lohman had a kill for Minnesota's 21st point, while Santana finished off the set with back-to-back kills for a 25-16 win.

Set 4: Wisconsin came back to tie the match at 2-2 off a 26-24 fourth-set win. Minnesota opened the fourth set with a 6-2 lead when Seliger-Swenson had a kill. The lead forced Wisconsin to use one of its timeouts early. The Badgers responded out of the break went on a five-point run to take a 7-6 lead. The Gophers took a timeout and came out of the break with a Hannah Tapp kill. The two teams traded points until the 13-13 mark before Minnesota rattled off three-straight points for a 16-13 with Hannah Tapp/Seliger-Swenson block, a Katie Schau kill and a Santana kill, as Wisconsin called a timeout. The Badgers would come back and tie the set at 22, before Minnesota took a 24-22 lead. The Badgers, however, came back and had two kills, followed by two Gopher attack errors to win the set, 26-24.

Set 5: The Gophers hit .333 in the final set to close out the match. The Gophers had six kills, committed just one error in 15 attempts, while they held the Badgers to nine kills, five attack errors in 21 attempts. Minnesota started the set with a 7-3 lead. After a Wilhite kill for a 4-3 lead, the serve rotation of Rosado produced an ace and back-to-back Wisconsin attack errors. The Badgers called a timeout, but Minnesota added another point for an 8-3 lead and switched sides. The Badgers went on a run and cut the lead to 8-6 as Minnesota called a timeout. Paige Tapp came out of the timeout with a kill, followed by a 10-7 lead off a Wisconsin attack error. After a ball-handling error by Wisconsin for a 12-9 Gopher lead, Minnesota went up 13-10 on a Santana kill. Lohman had a kill for set point, while the Gophers won the match off Wisconsin's fifth attack error of the set.
