Gophers Win Series Against Wisconsin

The No. 11 University of Minnesota volleyball team defeated the No. 15 Wisconsin Badgers in four sets, Saturday night, at the Sports Pavilion in front of a sellout crowd of 5,597 fans. Tonight's attendance was the largest crowd for the Golden Gophers this season.
Despite being outblocked 11 to 7.5, Minnesota had 61 kills to Wisconsin's 58, and outhit the Badgers .244 to .100. Daly Santana led the Gophers with 21 kills, and Paige Tapp followed with 11 kills and hit for .409. Hannah Tapp and Molly Lohman both had 4 block assists on the match. Santana and Sarah Wilhite each had 3 service aces in four sets. Samantha Seliger-Swenson had 51 assists, and Dalianliz Rosado added 19 digs.
Minnesota will be on the road for two matches, traveling to No. 3 Nebraska and Iowa next weekend. The Gophers face the Huskers on Friday, Oct. 23, and the Hawkeyes, Oct. 24, both at 7 p.m.
Set Breakdown:
Set 1: Minnesota used a .536 hitting clip to Wisconsin's .407 to earn a 25-20 first set win. In all, both teams contributed 33 kills, led slightly by the Gophers with 17. Santana and Paige Tapp each had four kills in the set, while Hannah Tapp and Lohman each had three. After six tie scores and two lead changes, the Gophers took the lead for good at 8-7. Minnesota led, 12-9, off a Wisconsin hitting error as the Badgers called a timeout. A Santana kill pushed the score to a 17-15 lead. Wisconsin pulled within one at 18-17, but Minnesota added back-to-back kills for a 20-17 lead off a block. Leading 22-20, Minnesota finished off the set with a Paige Tapp kill, a Wisconsin hitting error and a Sarah Wilhite service ace to go up, 1-0.
Set 2: The Gophers went up, 2-0, off a 25-23 set win. Minnesota trailed early, 7-4, and took a timeout. Trailing 10-6, the Gophers strung together a 6-1 run to take a narrow 12-11 lead, capped off by a solo block from Wilhite. Minnesota then took a 17-13 lead off a Santana kill. Wisconsin responded and went on its own run and tied the set at 18 off a Kelli Bate kill, and took a 20-18 lead off back-to-back blocks. Down 21-19, Minnesota came roaring back with two-straight Hannah Tapp kills, followed by two-straight Santana aces for a 23-21 lead. The Gophers closed out the set with a Wilhite kill for set point, followed by a Lohman kill for the set win.
Set 3: Wisconsin put the match at 2-1 when it hit .350 in the third set with a 25-19 win. The Badgers had 17 kills, three errors in 40 attempts in the set win. The Badgers jumped out to a 5-1 lead, which forced Minnesota to take a timeout. The Gophers came within two at 12-10 on a Santana kill. The Badgers pushed the lead 17-11 with a Gopher attack error. As Santana added Minnesota's 18th and 19th point, the Badgers closed out the set with a block for a 25-19 score.
Set 4: Minnesota rebounded with a 25-19 set win and a 3-1 match victory. After the two teams tied at 4-4, the Gophers maintained control from the 5-4 mark of the fourth set. Minnesota pushed the lead to 12-5 off a Hannah Tapp/Lohman block. The Badgers closed the lead to 13-10 off a kill as the Gophers called a timeout. After another kill out of the break for the Badgers, Minnesota went on a 4-1 run after an Alyssa Goehner kill and a 17-12 lead. Minnesota went up 22-16 on a Santana ace, pushed the score to 23-17 on a H Tapp/Lohman block and a Santana kill for match point. Paige Tapp finished off the match with a kill, her 11th of the match.
