MINNEAPOLIS - The Golden Gophers will compete at two meets this week as the No. 23 Minnesota women's cross country team heads to the Wisconsin adidas Invitational on Friday and the Tori Neubauer Invitational on Saturday.
About the 2015 Wisconsin adidas Invitational
Fourteen Gophers will race at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational 6K at Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Madison, Wis., at 11 a.m. CT Friday. The men's 8K race follows the women's championship race at 11:45 a.m., and the meet also includes "B" races for both men (1:10 p.m.) and women (12:30 p.m.).
The women's field includes 36 teams with 20 nationally ranked teams: No. 1 New Mexico, No. 3 Providence, No. 6 Boise State, No. 8 Iowa State, No. 10 Washington, No. 11 Arkansas, No. 12 North Carolina State, No. 13 Michigan State, No. 14 Wisconsin, No. 15 Syracuse, No. 16 Penn State, No. 17 Virginia, No. 18 Notre Dame, No. 19 North Carolina, No. 20 West Virginia, No. 21 Vanderbilt, No. 22 BYU, No. 23 (tie) Minnesota, No. 23 (tie) William & Mary, and No. 25 Princeton. In addition, Big Ten rivals Indiana, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State, Penn State, and Wisconsin will go head-to-head this week.
Minnesota's roster for the Wisconsin adidas Invitational is made up of Courtney Alama, Danielle Anderson, Liz Berkholtz, Emily Betz, Emily Castanias, Tamara Gorman, Haley Johnson, Taylor Mikkalson, Patty O'Brien, Jamie Piepenburg, Madeline Strandemo, Stacey Swatek, Kaila Urick, and Tess Wasowicz.
About the 2015 Tori Neubauer Invitational
The Tori Neubauer Invitational is set for 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Ettrick Golf Club in Ettrick, Wis. Team scores will not be kept.
Gophers Amelia Barczi, Kate Bishop, Madeline Brighouse Glueck, Melissa Cabak, Paige D'Heilly, Caitlin Dillon, Molly Eastman, Anne Haakenstad, Nicole Heitzman, Sarah Klecker, Liz Miller, Naomi Ollila, Paige Peschel, Kate Shelerud, Delaney Sinnen, Ellen Snyder, Violet Weibel, Laura Werking, and Rebecca Wesley are slated to compete in the 6K race.
2014 Wisconsin adidas Invitational Rewind
Michigan State won the team title while Iowa State's Crystal Nelson took home the individual title at last year's Wisconsin adidas Invitational. The Cyclones' Crystal Nelson ran the 6k in 19:35, clinching a four-second victory over Michigan State's Rachele Schulist. The Gophers finished 26th at the race, led by Liz Berkholtz, who placed 38th overall.
2014 Tori Neubauer Invitational Rewind
Marnie Kinnaird, Melissa Cabak, and Hannah Trasser led the Gophers at last year's Tori Neubauer Invitational, which featured 30 teams. Kinnaird placed 24th overall, clocking a time of 23:01.24 over the 6K course. Cabak was the second Gopher to finish, clocking a time of 23:12.32 for 36th place, followed by Trasser in 44th (23:23.06) overall.
Last Time Out: Greater Louisville Classic
Minnesota placed fourth with 126 points at the Greater Louisville Classic. Haley Johnson and Liz Berkholtz led the Gophers with top-20 finishes. Berkholtz finished 14th overall in 17:15.82, while Johnson finished 17th in 17:18.78.
Behind Johnson and Berkholtz, Madeline Strandemo (17:30.46), Jamie Piepenburg (17:33.25), and Kaila Urick (17:35.09) completed Minnesota's top five runners. Minnesota placed fourth behind team champion No. 8 Michigan (42 points) No. 6 Iowa State (77 points) and No. 19 Penn State (112 points). Lipscomb finished off the top five teams with 195 points.
Members of the team also raced at the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Invitational where Emily Castanias and Molly Eastman led Minnesota with top-20 finishes.
Gophers Remain No. 23 in USTFCCCA Rankings
Minnesota remained No. 23 in the nation and second in the Midwest region according to the most recent U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national poll and regional rankings. The Gophers have their highest ranking since landing at No. 20 over the last three weeks of the 2014 regular season rankings.
No. 1 New Mexico, No. 2 Colorado, No. 3 Providence, No. 4 Oregon, and No. 5 Michigan make up the nation's top five teams in the most recent poll (Oct. 6). The Big Ten has seven teams receiving national recognition in No. 5 Michigan, No. 13 Michigan State, No. 14 Wisconsin, No. 16 Penn State, No. 23 Minnesota, Purdue (received nine votes) and Indiana (received six votes).
Race at Les Bolstad Course
Local runners and cross country fans alike have two upcoming opportunities to race on the Golden Gophers' home course at Les Bolstad Golf Course in Jack's Twilight Run at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23 and Rocky's Run at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8.
Join the Gophers in one or both of these open six-kilometer races and toe the line on Minnesota's home cross country course. Both events will feature race-day registration only.
