On Wednesday night at Target Center, University of Minnesota alumnae Lindsay Whalen and Shae Kelley won the WNBA title as part of the Minnesota Lynx roster. Whalen played for the Golden Gophers from 2000-04, while Kelley played as a graduate transfer in 2014-15.
The league championship was the third of Whalen's professional career. She was traded to the Lynx in 2010, and has collected championship rings in 2011, 2013 and 2015. Former Gopher Janel McCarville was also part of the 2013 championship team. Whalen, a three-time All-WNBA selection and five-time all-star, earlier in the season passed the 2,000-assist mark for her career.
Kelley was head coach Marlene Stollings' first recruit at Minnesota. She was drafted 35th overall by the Lynx following her one season with the program. Kelley later signed a pair of one-week contracts with the squad before being signed for the rest of the season.
