Freshman Spotlight: Ryan Wangler

Gophersports.com caught up with Gopher gymnast freshman, Savage, Minn. native, Ryan Wangler about what he's most looking forward to this coming season both on and off the competition floor.

How did you get into gymnastics?
My sister did gymnastics and my mom was my coach at Minnesota Valley.

Did you play any other sports growing up?
No, gymnastics was always my main focus.

Why did you choose the University of Minnesota?
Ever since I was little, the University of Minnesota has been my favorite college and I always knew I wanted to go here.

Have you chosen a major or leaning towards a specific area of study?
I am currently undecided, but I'm interested in business and marketing.

What do you like to do in your free time when you're not training in the gym?
I love to watch Netflix, hangout with my teammates and friends and go backpacking.

What are you most looking forward to as a UMN gymnast?
Competing as a Gopher will be a dream come true.

Who was your athletic role model growing up?
Being from Minnesota, my role model growing up was the U of M gymnastics team! The things that those guys could do drove me to want to be just as amazing.

What's your favorite part about gymnastics? Do you have a favorite apparatus?
My favorite part about gymnastics is training new skills and my favorite event is pommel horse.

What type of music most pumps you up for competition?
Hip-Hop and Rap get me really pumped up.

Do you have any pre-competition rituals or superstitions?
No, nothing further from listening to music and getting in the zone.
