The No. 4 University of Minnesota volleyball team earned a 3-0 win over Indiana on Wednesday night. The Golden Gophers won 25-17, 25-21, 25-16 to improve to 18-3 overall and 10-1 in the Big Ten Conference.
As a team, the Gophers hit .308 to Indiana's .107 and out blocked the Hoosiers, 8-3. Daly Santana had 17 kills in 39 attempts, while Sarah Wilhite had 8 kills and 4 blocks. Hannah Tapp and Paige Tapp each had six kills on the match, with Tapp hitting .417. Molly Lohman had seven kills and put up six blocks in the sweep. Samantha Seliger-Swenson had a match-high 37 assists, and Dalianliz Rosado had 17 digs.
Minnesota is set to host No. 17 Purdue on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Gophers will stay at home the following weekend to host Michigan and Michigan State.
Set Breakdown:
Set 1: The Gophers hit .243, while they limited Indiana to just .100 for a 25-17 set win. Minnesota opened up the set with a 6-2 lead before Indiana took a timeout and responded and later tied the set at 9-9. As the two teams exchanged points through 11 until Minnesota went on a 7-1 run and an 18-12 lead. The Gophers pushed the lead to 19-13 on a Santana kill and 21-14 lead off a Lohman kill. With a 22-17 lead, Minnesota closed out the set off three Indiana errors for a 1-0 lead.
Set 2: The Gophers bettered their hitting efficiency in the second set to .273 as they took the second set, 25-21. Minnesota built a 13-8 lead off a Wilhite/Lohman block that forced Indiana to call a timeout. Minnesota later pushed the score to 19-12 off a Santana kill. The Hoosiers attempted a comeback when they had back-to-back blocks and a kill as Minnesota's lead was at 19-16. After the Gophers called a timeout, Minnesota went on a 3-1 lead to push it to 22-17 as Indiana called a timeout. Lohman added Minnesota's 23rd point at 23-18. As Indiana threatened at 23-21, the Gophers called a timeout and closed out the set after an Indiana attack error and a Wilhite/Lohman block to go up, 2-0.
Set 3: Minnesota polished off the win hitting .405 in the set to Indiana's .085 to win, 25-16. Santana had seven kills in the set and hit .583, while the Gophers added four blocks in the set. Minnesota led from the get go as the Gophers opened the set with an 8-3 lead. After a Wilhite kill and an Indiana attack error, Indiana called its second timeout as the Gophers held a 15-6 lead. The score was at 20-10 off a Paige Tapp/Wilhite block, while it got pushed to 23-14 off a Santana kill. Santana then finished off the set with back-to-back kills for the 25-16 set and match win.
