MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) – Gopher Hockey alum Alex Goligoski has been named an alternate captain for the Dallas Stars, the organization announced on Tuesday.

“It’s an honor from the coaching staff, management and the guys in the room. I don’t take it lightly,” Goligoski said. “Obviously, there is no shortage of leaders in this room, the guys coming in and even with the young guys there are a lot of natural leaders in here. It’s an honor and I look forward to wearing it.”

A native of Grand Rapids, Minn., Goligoski has played in 480 regular-season NHL games with 240 points (50 goals, 190 assists) through eight seasons. The defenseman, who won a Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh in 2009, has also played in 21 playoff games with 14 points (three goals, 14 assists).

“He’s a great person off the ice. He’s a good leader on the ice and off the ice,” coach Lindy Ruff said of Goligoski. “He’s one of our best competitors. It’s a heck of an accomplishment, and he’ll represent our team really well.”

A First Team All-American for the Gophers in 2007, Goligoski was a three-time All-WCHA honoree and an alternate captain during his college career. In 118 career games, he totaled 98 points (25 goals, 73 assists) and was the 2006-07 WCHA Defensive Player of the Year.
