Gophers Earn Four-Set Win Over Northwestern

The No. 4 University of Minnesota volleyball team earned a 3-1 win (25-23, 25-19, 22-25, 25-18) over Northwestern, tonight, in Evanston, Ill. With the win, the Golden Gophers improve to 22-3 overall and 14-1 in the Big Ten and have now won 13-straight Big Ten matches.
Molly Lohman and Hannah Tapp paced the Gophers as they each had 13 kills, while Sarah Wilhite closely followed with 12. Lohman's 13 was a career high for the sophomore while she also added a team-best .545 hitting clip. Lohman and Hannah Tapp also led the Gophers in blocking when the each had 10 total blocks apiece. That mark also tied Lohman's career high and a season best. In all, Minnesota had 15 blocks to Northwestern's six. The Gophers out hit the Wildcats, .276 to .211.
Minnesota is set to face No. 1 Penn State, Saturday night, at the Sports Pavilion. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
Set Breakdown:
Set 1: Minnesota used six blocks in the first set to take a 25-23 set win. After trading points, Northwestern took a 16-14 lead off back-to-back kills as Minnesota called a timeout. Since the break, Minnesota went on a 5-2 run to take a 19-18 lead as the Wildcats called their first timeout. Minnesota added a block at 20-19, a Lohman kill at 21-19 and another block at 22-19, but Northwestern answered with back-to-back kills for a 22-21 deficit. As the Gophers led, 24-22 off another block, the Wildcats added a kill for a 24-23 Gopher lead. After a Minnesota timeout, the Gophers put away the set off a Northwestern attack error to go up, 1-0.
Set 2: The Gophers hit .370 in the second set for a 25-19 win. Minnesota opened up the second with a 9-5 lead as Northwestern called its first timeout. The Gophers, however, continued to push the lead as a Lohman kill put Minnesota up, 12-7. A Lohman/H Tapp block added a 13-8 Gopher lead, while back-to-back Paige Tapp kills pushed the score to 16-11. As Northwestern cut the Gopher lead to two at 19-17, Minnesota added back-to-back points on a Lohman kill and a Northwestern attack error for 21-17. Kills by Lohman and Wilhite pushed it to set point, while Katie Schau added an ace to give Minnesota a 2-0 lead.
Set 3: Northwestern hit .325 in the third set to take a 25-22 win and cut the match lead to 2-1. Trailing 7-5, Hannah Tapp had a kill, while she and Lohman added another block to tie the set at 7-7. Minnesota took an 11-9 lead but Northwestern went on a 4-0 run to tie the set and take a 13-11 lead. Paige Tapp, however, added two kills, while she and Santana connected on a block for a 15-14 lead. The two teams tied at 15, 16 and 17 before Northwestern added two points to take a 19-17 advantage as Minnesota called a timeout. The Wildcats pushed the score to 21-18 off a kill. As Northwestern pushed the score to 22-19, Minnesota called its second timeout. Trailing 24-21, Minnesota added two-straight as Northwestern called a timeout. However, the Wildcats finished off the set with kill for the 25-22 set win.
Set 4: Minnesota hit a match-best .375 to win the fourth, 25-18 and take the match. Despite Minnesota taking a 5-1 lead to start the set, Northwestern battled back and tied the set at 8-8 and took a 10-8 lead. Minnesota called a timeout at that mark. Trailing 12-11, Minnesota went on a 5-0 run, capped off by a Daly Santana ace and a Wilhite kill, which forced Northwestern to call a timeout. Although Northwestern earned a sideout, the Gophers would later take an 18-13 lead off a Northwestern attack error. Wilhite added her 12th kill of the night for a 20-15 score as Northwestern called another timeout. Santana added two kills for the Gophers' 23rd and 24th point, while Hannah Tapp added her 13th kill of the match for the 3-1 win.
