The No. 4 University of Minnesota volleyball team earned a 3-0 sweep over No. 1 Penn State, 25-23, 25-20, 25-21, tonight at the Sports Pavilion in front of a sold out crowd of 5,535 fans.

With the win, the Golden Gophers' win streak is at 14-straight, and earned their first win over Penn State since 2010. The last time Minnesota swept Penn State dates back to 2003, while the last time Minnesota swept the Nittany Lions at home was in 2002.

As a team, Minnesota hit .275 to Penn State's .236, out blocked PSU, 9-7, and had a 7-1 ace advantage. Sarah Wilhite led the Gophers with 12 kills, including nine in the third set, hitting a team-high .579. Daly Santana had 11 kills, and Hannah Tapp had 10 with a team-high five blocks. Molly Lohman contributed six kills and four blocks, and Paige Tapp added five. Samantha Seliger-Swenson had 35 assists and Dalianliz Rosado added a team-high 10 digs. Katie Schau contributed eight digs, while Alyssa Goehner had five.

Minnesota will host Maryland this Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 6 p.m.

Set Breakdown:

Set 1: The Gophers took a 1-0 lead off a 25-23 first set win. After being tied at 10-10, Minnesota went on a 6-0 run, capped off by a Lohman/H Tapp block. The Gophers pushed the lead to 18-13 with a kill from Lohman. PSU responded with a 5-1 run to put the Gopher lead to 19-18. Minnesota went up 21-18 off a Santana kill, but Penn State strung four together to tie up the set at 21. The Gophers called a timeout and came out of the break with a Santana kill and a PSU error to go up, 23-21. After a Hannah Tapp kill put it at set point, while Lohman added the final point for a 25-23 win.

Set 2: Minnesota took a 2-0 lead off a 25-20 second set win. Hannah Tapp had eight kills in the second set alone. After the two teams were tied at 5-5, Minnesota built a 10-6 lead as PSU called a timeout. Minnesota, however, would continue the run and led by double-digits as Paige Tapp delivered an ace at the 18-8 mark. On Tapp's serve rotation, the Gophers established five-straight. The Nittany Lions battled back and cut Minnesota's lead to 21-15 as the Gophers called a timeout. PSU continued the comeback and cut Minnesota's lead to 22-19 as Minnesota used its second timeout. Minnesota, however, finished off the set with a PSU attack error for Minnesota's 23rd point, while a H Tapp/Seliger-Swenson block put it at set point and Wilhite finished it off with her third kill of the match for the 25-20 set win.

Set 3: Minnesota hit. 417 in the third with a 25-21 set clinch. Wilhite hit .900 in the third set alone when she had nine kills in 10 attempts and did not commit and error. Minnesota and PSU went through 11 tie scores and two lead changes before Minnesota held the lead for good at 19-18. As Minnesota had an 18-15 advantage, PSU responded and tied the set for the last time at 18-18. Minnesota received a kill from Santana to go up 19-18. Santana added a kill and an ace for a 22-19 lead. PSU called a timeout, but Minnesota continued its momentum with a Wilhite kill at 23-20 and pushed it to set point at 24-20 off a PSU attack error. As PSU had a kill for a 24-21 score, Wilhite closed out the set and the match with her ninth kill of the set.
