Gophers End 15-Match Win Streak with 5-Set Loss

The No. 3 University of Minnesota volleyball team fell, 3-2, tonight to No. 15 Purdue in a five-set decision. With the loss, the Golden Gophers dropped just their second Big Ten match of the season and broke a 15-match win streak. Minnesota trailed, 22-25, 19-25, won the next two, 34-32, 25-19, but fell in the fifth and deciding set, 15-9.
Hannah Tapp led the Gophers with 22 kills and hit .513, while Daly Santana followed with 21 kills and 16 digs and Paige Tapp had 16 kills. Molly Lohman led the Gophers with six blocks. Samantha Seliger-Swenson added a career-best 66 assists in the loss, while she also added 11 digs. As a team, the Gophers hit .244 to Purdue's .242, and held an 82-70 dig advantage.
Minnesota returns to action when it faces No. 16 Ohio State, Wednesday night, at 7 p.m. It is the regular season finale for the Gophers.
Set Breakdown:
Set 1: Minnesota opened the first set with an 11-8 advantage, but the Boilermakers battled back and went on a 7-1 run to take a 15-12 lead as the Gophers called a timeout. As the Boilermakers built their lead to 19-14 Minnesota called its second timeout of the set. After the timeout, Minnesota responded to cut the Purdue lead to two at 20-18 as the Boilermakers used their first timeout. The Gophers tied up the set at 20 on a Lohman/H Tapp block and a Hannah Tapp kill, which forced Purdue to use its second timeout for a 6-1 run. Purdue, however, came out of the break with a 5-2 run to take a 1-0 lead.
Set 2: Purdue hit .300 to Minnesota's .051 to take a 2-0 lead. As the teams traded points through 11, Purdue rattled off three-straight and took a 14-11 lead as Minnesota called a timeout. The Gophers came out of the break and strung together four to take a 15-14 lead. Wilhite added a kill and a block in that span, while Paige Tapp added back-to-back kills. The Boilermakers called a timeout at that point and tied up the set at 15. Purdue would take an 18-15 lead as Minnesota called a timeout. The Boilermakers would take a 7-4 run to finish off the set.
Set 3: The Gophers fought off nine match points to take the third set, 34-32. The Gophers hit .396 in the set to Purdue's .265. Minnesota went up 9-5 off a Hannah Tapp kill. As Purdue called a timeout, the Boilermakers would tie the set at 10 off a block. As the two teams tied at 11, the Boilermakers went on a 6-2 run for an 18-13 lead as Minnesota called a timeout. Minnesota went on a 5-1 run to cut the Purdue lead to 19-18 as the Boilermakers called a timeout. Purdue would put the score at 21-18 off a block. Minnesota would later tie the set at 23-23 off a Purdue attack error. As the Boilermakers reached 24-23, the two teams went in a back and forth battle as Minnesota fought off nine match points. Trailing 32-21, Santana added a kill, followed by a Purdue attack error and a Hannah Tapp kill to push the score to 34-32 and a third set win.
Set 4: Minnesota hit .520 in the fourth set to tie up the match at 2-2 and send it to five sets. The Gophers used the momentum from the third set and extended it into the fourth to take a 12-9 lead as Purdue called a timeout. Minnesota, however, continued the momentum and took a 17-11 lead, capped off by an Alyssa Goehner kill, a Dalianliz Rosado ace, and a P Tapp/Lohman block, which forced Purdue to call a timeout. The Boilermakers came out of the break and rattled off three points, which forced Minnesota to call a timeout. The Gophers then went on a 6-1 run after their timeout to take a 23-15 lead. The Gophers would push it to set point on a Santana kill, while Hannah Tapp finished off the set with a kill for the 25-19 win.
Set 5: Purdue opened the fifth set with a 4-0 lead as Minnesota called a timeout. The Gophers cut the lead to one at 4-3 and again at 5-4 and 6-5. Purdue put two together for an 8-5 lead as the two teams switched sides. The Boilermakers added to their lead with they added a block, followed by a Gopher attack error. Purdue would later take a 13-7 lead and a 14-8 lead, both off blocks. The Boilermakers finished off the match with a kill to end the Gophers' win streak.
