Gophers Hold No. 10 National Ranking

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota men's gymnastics team remained at No. 10 in the national rankings after defeating the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and the University of Nebraska on Saturday evening at the Sports Pavilion.

Minnesota earned a season best 429.900 during Saturday's meet while claiming four of the six team event titles. Numerous members of the Maroon and Gold stepped up to make the meet a success for Minnesota inlcuding freshman Alex Wittenberg who earned third place overall on the floor exercise and co-captain Steve Jaciuk who won an individual event title on parallel bars with a 14.900. The final rotation of the night, the high bar, saw Gopher gymnasts occupy second through sixth place with freshman Joel Gagnon claiming the highest score for the team with a 14.90.

Gagnon currently sits in a tie for 33th place nationally on the floor exercise with an average score of 14.500. Minnesota senior Sean Bauer rounds out the top 50 gymnasts on the event with a 43rd place ranking and an average score of 14.350. Junior co-captain Paul Montague paces the Gophers on pommel horse with an average score of 14.250 and holds on to the 28th spot nationally.


The highest ranking for a Gopher in the individual rankings is Jaciuk who broke into the top 12 this week with an average score of 14.733 on parallel bars and occupies the 16th spot overall on still rings.

Minnesota will resume compeition on Saturday, Feb. 14 in Iowa City, Iowa as the Hawkeyes host a tri-meet between the Gophers, Iowa and Nebraska. Minnesota defeated Nebraska at home last weekend and have not faced the University of Iowa since the opening weekend of competition. The meet is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. CT and will air live on Big Ten Network.
