Minnesota Drops 4-3 Match to Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W.V. - The No. 71 Minnesota women's tennis team had a second win in West Virginia in its sights Sunday, but fell, 4-3, to Marshall at the Huntington Tennis Club in Huntington, W. Va. The Gophers dropped to 4-3 with the loss.
The Thundering Herd upped its edge in the all-time series between the schools to 4-2 with the win.
It was Minnesota that got the early edge in doubles, but Marshall ended up with the match's first point. Jessika Mozia and Julia Courter won, 8-6, at the No. 2 position, but MU came back by winning at Nos. 1 and 3.
In singles, the Herd took three of the first four matches to finish. Derya Turhan defeated Tereza Brichacova, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1 and Anna Pomyatinskaya beat Mozia, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, at No. 3 before Maja Vujic got the Maroon and Gold on the board with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 triumph at No. 4.
Marshall's Maddie Silver handed freshman Caroline Ryba her first loss in dual match singles at No. 2 to clinch the team win. The Gophers took the remaining matches as Aria Lambert and Courter won super tiebreakers at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively.
The Gophers will continue their season with their first home match in over a month when they play Drake Friday night at the Baseline Tennis Center. Dartmouth and South Dakota State come to town Sunday.
