The Golden Gophers lost their series finale 8-0 at No. 10 Texas on Sunday. The Longhorns (7-2) took advantage of 10 hits and 10 walks, while Minnesota (0-7) did not convert its six hits and three walks into any runs. Texas swept the four-game series.
Texas went up 2-0 in the first on a double by Brooks Marlow. The Longhorns sent 11 batters to the plate in the second, tacking on five more runs. Starter Neal Kunik (0-1) left in the second with an arm issue, and Lance Thonvold and Jordan Jess finished the long inning. Kunik was charged with three runs, and Thonvold four.
Toby Hanson batted 2-for-4 for the Gophers and is hitting .368 in his six starts. He collected Minnesota's only hit off Texas starter Kacy Clemens (1-1), who pitched five innings. Ben Johnson hit 4-for-5 with a run and two stolen bases for Texas.
Tyler Hanson and Matt Fiedler combined to pitch the final five innings for the Gophers. Hanson allowed one run on three hits and a walk in 2 2/3 innings. Fiedler, who started at designated hitter, tossed 2 1/3 innings of scoreless ball with one hit and three walks.
Tony Skjefte and Alex Boxwell singled in the eighth and stood on second and first, respectively, with one out. But the next two batters struck out and they were left in scoring position after a balk during the last at bat. The Gophers also had a scoring opportunity in the ninth. Toby Hanson hit an infield single with one out. Minnesota loaded the bases with two outs on a Jordan Smith single and Tony Skjefte walk, but the game ended on a flyout.
