ROSEMONT, Ill. - For an unprecedented fifth time this season and for the third consecutive week, the Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honor has been awarded to Minnesota women's gymnastics junior Lindsay Mable. With the honor, Mable becomes the first Minnesota gymnast in school history to pick up five weekly conference laurels in a season since the award started recognizing student-athletes on a weekly basis in 1999. Gopher great Laura Johnson earned the award four times in 2006.
After the weekend's performances, Mable has claimed the top spot in the all-around national rankings with an average score of 39.545 making her the first Gopher women's gymnast in program history to do so.
The award also marks the thirteenth weekly honor of Mable's storied collegiate career and the 25th Gymnast of the Week accolade for the Gophers in the 17 years the award has been presented. Mable is the ninth different Gopher to earn the award and she earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week six times in 2013. She is one of three gymnasts in 2015 to repeat as a weekly honor recipient.
This past weekend Mable led the Maroon and Gold to two victories as she picked up her eighth and ninth consecutive all-around crown. The Golden Gophers swept the team events during both meets, earning eight solid scores on the weekend. On Friday, Minnesota traveled to Ames, Iowa to take on the Iowa State University Cyclones for the second time this season. Mable recorded a 39.625 on the evening as she earned season-high scores on vault (9.950) and uneven bars (9.900) while tallying a 9.925 on beam and 9.875 on floor exercise. During Sunday's quad meet with Gustavus Aldophus, Hamline and Winona State, Mable paced the competition earning the all-around crown and three event titles. With six on the weekend, Mable has now won 22 event titles on the season, just three away from tying her 25 event wins from last season.
In 2014, Mable registered 25 event wins and 10 all-around titles in 14 team meets before winning the all-around at the Minneapolis NCAA Regional to qualify for the national all-around competition. The two-time All-American is a two-time First Team All-Big Ten selection and was named to the 2015 Preseason Big Ten Gymnasts to Watch list prior to the start of the 2015 season. Mable has also earned Academic All-Big Ten and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honors last academic year.
