ROSEMONT, Ill. - Senior Ellis Mannon was named Big Ten Co-Gymnast of the Week by the league office this afternoon after a stand out performance en route to an individual event title on pommel horse at the USA Gymnastics Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas, Nev. Mannon shares the weekly honor with Illinois' freshman Bobby Baker who finished in 11th place at the Winter Cup.
The award marks Mannon's first Big Ten weekly honor. The last Gopher to earn Gymnast of the Week was senior Steve Jaciuk on Feb. 18, 2013.
Mannon, who never relinquished the top spot on the apparatus, recorded season-best scores during both the preliminary and final rounds of competition on Thursday and Sunday, respectively as he paced the competition at the annual event.
Mannon's 15.250 during Thursday's preliminary round was tied by UC-Berkeley's Donothan Bailey and the two collegiate standouts went into the finals of the event on Saturday evening neck and neck.
The Indianapolis, Ind. native would stand alone on the podium on Saturday evening as he produced another season-high score of 15.450 and earned the individual title. Mannon's two first place finishes earned him 30 national team points as he vied for a spot to represent the United States as a member of the US National Team.
He also competed on the parallel bars where he earned a 14.250 and 14.900 on the weekend; good enough for fifth place overall.
The Minnesota men's gymnastics team will resume competition on Saturday, Feb. 28 as they travel to Palo Alto, Calif. to compete against Stanford and Cal as well as the national teams from both Japan and Canada.
