IOWA CITY - The 2015 Big Ten Men's Swimming and Diving Championships continued tonight with finals in the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and three-meter diving. The 400 medley relay was also contested. After night two, Minnesota is currently in sixth place with 132 points. Michigan, who has won the last four Big Ten titles, continues to lead with 281 points. Ohio State is in second with 211, Indiana third with 199, Purdue has 136.5 for fourth and Wisconsin rounds out the top-five with 134 points.
Senior CJ Smith finished eighth in the 500 freestyle, recording a 4:19.97. Smith posted a personal best during prelims (4:18.93), to qualify for the Championship heat for the first time in his collegiate career. Minnesota rookie Michael Nunan came from behind to win the consolation heat of the 500 free. Nunan finished with a time of 4:18.60 for ninth place.
Two sophomores represented Minnesota In the 200 IM. Jakub Maly finished twelfth with a time of 1:45.60, while Jonathon Thielen finished with a time of 1:49.34 for 16th place.
Sophomore Daryl Turner finished with a new personal best in the 50 freestyle with a time of 19.83 to take eleventh place.
Ian Gordon and Paul Fair qualified for the C final in the 50 free, but scratched to stay fresh for the rest of the meet.
In the 400 medley relay, Daryl Turner, Conner McHugh, Paul Fair and Ryan Miksch combined for a 3:10.49 to take seventh place.
Juniors Manny Pollard and Dylan Zoe returned to the one-meter to score for the Gophers. Pollard finished with 347.90 points for seventh place. Zoe finished third in the consolation final, eleventh overall on the one-meter, totaling 339.40 points.
Earlier this afternoon during one-meter diving prelims, senior Erik Larsen totaled 295.50 points for 17th place. Nick Rodriguez finished 22nd with a score of 286.60 points, Matt Barnard took 25th with a 283.65 and freshman Daniel Monaghan finished 28th with a score of 253.20.
Competition resumes tomorrow at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium in Iowa. Preliminary heats of the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast and 100 back will begin at 11:00 a.m. CT. Three-meter diving prelims will follow at 1:00 p.m.
