MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 70 Minnesota women's tennis team defeated Big 12 foe Iowa State, 4-1, at the Baseline Tennis Center Friday afternoon. The Gophers, winners of three of their last four matches, are now 7-4 on the season and improved to 5-1 at home.

Iowa State dropped to 2-5 on the season with the loss.

The match began with a strong doubles competition victory for the Maroon and Gold. The rookie tandem of Caroline Ryba and Mehvish Safdar came up big at No. 3 with a 6-0 win. Tereza Brichacova and Paula Rincon-Otero gave the Gophers a 1-0 lead by doubling up Samantha Budai and Ksenia Pronina at No. 1, 6-3.

In singles, Safdar kept Minnesota rolling with a dominant, 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6. She upped her dual-match singles record to 2-0 after winning her spring singles debut last week against South Dakota State.

Megan Cassens cut the Gophers' lead in half with a win for ISU at No. 3, but Julia Courter got the point right back at No. 5 by taking down Natalie Phippen, 6-2, 6-1.

The match came to an end when senior Brichacova capped off a 6-1, 7-6 (6) win in the top flight to make it 4-1. Ryba and Aria Lambert did not finish their singles matches at Nos. 2 and 5, respectively.

The Gophers pick up play in their current seven-match homestand with an 11 a.m. match against Marquette and a 4 p.m. tilt against Carleton Sunday.
