The Top 10.0 Things You Need to Know
1.0 - No. 14 Minnesota will host their final regular season home meet on Saturday, Feb. 28 at the Sports Pavilion. Due to changes in travel plans, the meet will now feature both New Hampshire and Big Ten Conference foe, Iowa. The start time has been adjusted to 6:30 p.m. and will be streamed live on BTN Plus. Live stats will be available and fans who wish to follow the action from home, including line ups and in-meet scores, can follow @GopherWGym on Twitter or use the hashtag #AlwaysGolden.
2.0 - The 2015 senior class will be honored at Saturday's meet for their contributions to the Minnesota gymnastics program and their accomplishments on the competition floor and in the classroom. Jenny Covers and Cierra Tomson have been vital members of the Golden Gophers for the past four years and will be sorely missed when they graduate this spring. Pick up a meet program and watch the video board during Saturday's meet for features on Covers and Tomson.
3.0- Last weekend, the Gophers fell to No. 7 Nebraska at the Sports Pavilion but all eyes were on junior Lindsay Mable as she had a career night for the Maroon and Gold. The Aurora, Colo. native paced the competition by posting a school record 39.675 in the all-around competition en route to her seventh consecutive all-around crown and two individual event titles. The previous school record was also set by Mable last season as she tallied a 39.650 on March 22, 2014 in order to secure the Big Ten all-around title. On Saturday, Mable earned a career-high and school record tying 9.975 on the floor exercise, good enough to earn her fourth straight floor exercise title. She also recorded solid scores on vault (9.900), bars (9.875) and beam (9.925). After an exception weekend for the Maroon and Gold, Mable earned her fourth and second straight Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honors of 2015. Individually, Mable ranks seventh in the national in terms of all-around average score while she currently sits in second place in the region behind Utah's Georgia DaBritz.
4.0 - Last weekend, the Gophers capped a two-meet weekend with a perfect 4-0 finish. First, the Maroon and Gold traveled to Ames, Iowa to compete against Iowa State for the second time in 2015.TheGophers scored a 196.350 and swept the event titles as they outscored Iowa State on every event while a Gopher earned the individual event title on every apparatus as well as the all-around crown. Tomson earned her first two event titles of the season as she tied with junior Lindsay Mable on vault and earned a 9.900 on the uneven bars to win the event. The Gophers went on to earn three victories on Sunday afternoon at their annual Best of Minnesota meet over Gustavus, Hamile and Winona State.
5.0 - This past weekend Mable led the Maroon and Gold to two victories as she picked up her eighth and ninth consecutive all-around crown. Mable recorded a 39.625 on Friday evening as she earned season-high scores on vault (9.950) and uneven bars (9.900) while tallying a 9.925 on beam and 9.875 on floor exercise. During Sunday's quad meet with Gustavus Aldophus, Hamline and Winona State, Mable paced the competition earning the all-around crown and three event titles. With six on the weekend, Mable has now won 22 event titles on the season, just three away from tying her 25 event wins from last season. For an unprecedented fifth time this season and for the third consecutive week, the Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honor has been awarded to Minnesota women's gymnastics junior Lindsay Mable . With the honor, Mable becomes the first Minnesota gymnast in school history to pick up five weekly conference laurels in a season since the award started recognizing student-athletes on a weekly basis in 1999. Gopher great Laura Johnson earned the award four times in 2006.After the weekend's performances, Mable has claimed the top spot in the all-around national rankings with an average score of 39.545 making her the first Gopher women's gymnast in program history to do so.
6.0 - Minnesota moved up in the rankings from 19th to 14th after collecting four victories last weekend. The Maroon and Gold have an average score of 196.010 as they head into this weekend's tri-meet. The squad continues to rise in weekly rankings as they are ranked 19th for the second week in a row on vault (49.125) and improved from 25th to 20th on uneven bars (48.915), from 16th to 13th on balance beam (48.945) and from 22nd to 12th on floor exercise (49.135).
7.0 - The Gophers returned 9 gymnasts from 2014 including two-time All-American and Big Ten all-around Champion,Lindsay Mable, as well as Gopher standouts in seniorsJenny CoversandCierra Tomson. Minnesota had a successful 2014 season where they won their second consecutive Big Ten regular season title and advanced to the NCAA Regional held at the University of Minnesota. Minnesota welcomed five new members to the family at the beginning of the academic year. FreshmenAbby DeMuse, BaileyGardner, CiaraGardner,Hannah HitchcockandRachel Rowlandwill make their regular season debut when the Gophers host Iowa State on Saturday. At the annual intrasquad meet,Gardnerplaced third in the all-around and DeMuse finished in a tie for second place on the bars (9.750) and fourth on floor (9.750).
8.0 - The Maroon and Gold will host six home meets during the 2015 season including the Big Ten Qualifier featuringIowa, Michigan, Penn State and Rutgers on March 14. Last season, six Big Ten teams finished the 2014 season ranked in the top 25 teams in the country. Minnesota finished the season ranked 14th nationally. 9.0 - The back-to-back Big Ten Conference regular season champions were tabbed to place fifth in the Big Ten this season. JuniorsLindsay MableandMadeline Hanleywere named as gymnasts to watch this season.The University of Michigan women's gymnastics team earned the coveted top spot in the coaches' poll while No. 2 Nebraska and No. 3 Illinois round out the top three. Minnesota will match up with Maryland on Thursday. The Terrapins earned the seventh place spot in the preseason poll.
