Minnesota to Host UIC, Nebraska

MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 10 University of Minnesota men's gymnastics team will host the third of their four scheduled home meets this weekend as they welcome the University of Illinois-Chicago Flames and Nebraska Cornhuskers. The meet is set to begin at 7 p.m. CT and will be streamed live on BTN Plus ($). When they met last...

In the first weekend of competition, the Gophers traveled to Chicago, Ill., where the University of Illinois-Chicago hosted the 45th annual Windy City Invitational.

The University of Illinois took home the team crown with a score of 428.100 while Minnesota placed fifth (410.45) and UIC finished in sixth (388.400).

Freshman Joel Gagnon made his Gopher debut with a score of 14.550 on floor and senior Steve Jaciuk claimed third on the parallel bars after tallying a 14.550. Other Gopher highlights included a 14.500 mark from senior Jack Metcalf which added to the team's highest event score of the night (70.750) on vault. Senior Ellis Mannon was the sole gymnast for the maroon and gold to compete in all six events; he earned fourth in the all-around with a final overall score of 83.050.

For the Flames, senior Brett Valin tied for fourth on vault with a score of 14.850 and finished seventh overall in the all-around - earning 78.050 on the night. Prevailing over Valin in the all-around, fellow senior Jason Gaides tallied a 81.200 earning him fifth place. Sophomore Alexander Dumstort competed on the parallel bars and floor, earning a 13.200 and 14.000, respectively.

The last time Minnesota met Nebraska was at the 2014 NCAA Championships held in Ann Arbor, Mich., where Mannon claimed the individual national crown on the pommel horse.

For the Cornhuskers, junior Grant Perdue qualified for the individual event finals in both vault and floor exercise; he took tenth overall on floor after tallying a 14.650 and tenth on vault, scoring 14.60. As a team, the Cornhuskers finished in eighth place with a final cumulative score of 436.350.

Prior to nationals at the 2014 Big Ten Championships, Minnesota finished fifth overall with a score of 429.150, while Nebraska fell right behind in the sixth with 428.150 points.

In the individual finals, Cornhusker junior Robbie Kocks claimed third place on the still rings and Perdue finished fifth on floor. For the Gophers, Mannon earned the Big Ten title on pommel horse with a score of 15.325 and Metcalf tied for fifth on the still rings after tallying a 15.175. Jackiuk competed on the parallel and high bar in the individual finals where he placed fifth and seventh, respectively.

Illinois Meet Recap

Last weekend, the Gophers traveled to Champaign, Ill., to face the University of Illinois Illini. The Maroon and Gold fell with a final score of 419.800 to Illinois' 435.200.

The top scores of the night for the Gophers went to junior Paul Montague, Jr. on pommel horse (14.350), Gagnon on floor (14.000), Metcalf on still rings (14.650), senior Sean Bauer on vault (14.600), Mannon on parallel bars (14.950), and Jackiuk on high bars (14.900).

The Gophers currently sit at 1-2 on the season and 0-1 in head-to-head Big Ten Competition.

Opponent's Results

Last weekend, Nebraska earned their first victory of the season after overcoming No.14 Army at home with an overall score of 421.750 to 412.800.

On the night, the Cornhuskers notched a season-best team score on four events and 10 individual gymnasts recorded career high scores. Freshman Daniel Leal earned career best marks on the rings (14.20), parallel bars (14.60) and pommel horse (14.20).

Going into the fourth rotation, the Cornhuskers trailed Army but were able to regain the lead as junior Sam Chamberlain added a career high 14.75 to the event team total (70.300).

Across the state border, the Iowa Hawkeyes hosted the UIC Flames who fell 398.600 to 428.600.

Gaides led the team in both high bar and pommel horse after earning 13.900 and 13.850, respectively. He also nabbed the all-around title with a final tally of 84.100 on the night.

Gophers in the National Rankings

Even after falling to Illinois last weekend, Minnesota remains in the national rankings rounding out the Top 10.

The top three spots are held by Oklahoma, Penn State and Stanford, respectively. Six of the Big Ten teams are within the Top 10 nationally.

This weekend's opponents, the UIC Flames and Nebraska Cornhuskers sit at No.14 and No. 9 respectively.

Looking Ahead

Next week, the Gophers will hit the road to travel to Iowa City where they will meet the Iowa Hawkeyes, as well back-to-back competition against Nebraska.

The meet is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. CT.
